Comets wins World Series qualifier

The Nevada Comets 12 and under softball team won the National Softball Association "A" title on Sunday in the NSA World Series Qualifier in Fernley. The Comets qualified for the NSA World Series to be held July 15-21 in Northern California.

After losing to the Nevada Wildcats 5-4 earlier in the tournament, the Comets gained revenge by beating the Wildcats 7-6 in the championship game. Winning pitcher Kaitlin Capra and Jennifer Purcell combined to work seven innings on the mound. Capra and Ali Tedford each had two hits and a run, Purcell, Mary Garcia and Becky Breuer all had a hit, Sydney Knorzer had a hit and a run, Taya Rains tripled and had two RBI and Michaela Hoff doubled.

The Comets opened with a 4-1 win over the Nevada Lightning. Capra allowed one run on two hits while striking out seven and walking one over five innings for the win. Purcell was 2-for-2 with three RBI and a run and Knorzer and Breuer each added a hit. In the 5-4 loss to the Wildcats, Purcell struck out six over five innings in taking the loss. Garcia was 2-for-3 with a run, Purcell, Rains and Brigitte Murdock all had a hit and a run and Capra added a hit.

The Comets came back to beat the Lightning 5-3. Capra was the winning pitcher, allowing two runs and two hits while striking out six over five innings. Purcell was 2-for-2 with a run, Capra had a hit and a run and Becky Hval doubled and scored a run.

For the tournament, Purcell hit .667 (6-for-9) and Capra hit. .555 (5-for-9).
