No players with Northern Nevada ties were taken on Thursday during the first day of the Major League Baseball draft, but there's still a long ways to go.
Only the first five rounds were completed on Thursday, with still the final 45 rounds to be completed today.
Among the local players with the best chance of being drafted and signed are Western Nevada Community College pitcher Justin Garcia, who has signed with UNLV. It's possible that a Major League team could draft Garcia high enough and be willing to offer him a large enough signing bonus to sign him.
WNCC pitcher Stephen Sauer could also be drafted, but it's not expected that Major League teams will be willing to give him a large enough signing bonus for him to pass up a scholarship to Arizona State where he signed last fall.
Wildcat pitcher T.J. Wohlever may also be drafted. Even if he isn't drafted, it's possible he could sign with a Major League team as a free agent.
Among other local players who could be drafted today include Galena's Tony Thompson and Eric Maupin, South Tahoe's Stephen Yarrow and WNCC's Brad Carlsen. Several University of Nevada players could be drafted as well. Among the Nevada players who are expected to be drafted today are pitchers Ryan Rodriguez and Matt Renfree.
