Bergman takes loss for Silver Sox

Charles Merricks' 11 strikeouts led the Yuma Scorpions to its 10th win of the season, 6-2 over the Reno Silver Sox on Sunday in Yuma, Ariz.

The Oxnard, Calif., native went the distance as he allowed two runs on nine hits for his second win of the season.

Pascual Matos led the way offensively for Yuma (10-1) with a 3-for-4 evening that included a two-run home run in the second inning which gave the home team the lead for good.

The veteran catcher also scored three runs and totaled three RBI.

Rich Janeway also went deep for his first home run of the season. Janeway and Osvany Almario also had two hits each as the Scorpions outhit the Silver Sox 12-9.

The Scorpions have surpassed the 10-hit mark in nine of 11 games.

Reno continued to hit the ball well, as it did in all three games against Yuma, but couldn't knock in runners when it needed to, stranding 12 runners on base.

The Silver Sox got two hits apiece from Travis Tully, Bub Madrid, Jose Rodriguez and Mike Done. Rodriguez hit his league-leading fourth home run.

Carson High graduate Dusty Bergman took the loss for the Silver Sox (2-8) as he pitched seven innings, allowing five runs on 10 hits. He struck out two and walked one.

Reno faces St. George tonight at 7 p.m. at Peccole Park.
