Auditions aheadfor 'High School Musical'

Wild Horse Children's Theater announces auditions for Disney's "High School Musical" for actors ages 8-16. Auditions for leads and chorus will be held Tuesday and Wednesday beginning at 5 p.m. in the Children's Museum of Northern Nevada, 813 N. Carson St.

An additional audition for chorus only will be held on Saturday Sept. 8 at 10 a.m. Come prepared with a song of one minute or less. Be prepared to read from the script and learn a short dance routine.

Rehearsals will begin the second week of September, with performances scheduled for Nov. 30-Dec. 9.

This Northern Nevada premiere will be directed by Carol Scott and produced by Pat Josten. Our other professional instructors include musical director Susan Sonnemaker and choreographer Robin Kato.

Museum presents lecture on doctor's anthropology collection

Dr. Eugene Hattori, curator of anthropology, will discuss Dr. Simeon L. Lee's anthropology collections at the Nevada State Museum at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Nevada State Museum.

Lee was a distinguished Civil War veteran and prominent citizen and physician who settled in Carson City in 1870. Following Victorian custom, he collected and displayed objects of historical and anthropological interest. He differed from the usual cabinet of curiosities by filling his house with an overabundance of local Washoe and Northern Paiute basketry, shell leis from the South Pacific, Eskimo ivory scrimshaw, Plains Indian war clubs, Dall sheep horn Potlatch spoons and a mummified hawk from an Egyptian tomb.

Lecture highlights legend of VC prostitute

The Carson City Historical Society Presents a Reflections of Carson City "Julia Bulette: The Legend of a Virginia City Prostitute" lecture by Susan James, former University of Nevada, Reno lecturer and scholar-in-residence for the Fourth Ward School Museum.

The free lecture is at 7 p.m. Thursday at the Carson City Library, and is open to the public.

Federal employees hold picnic

The annual Min-Gard NARFE Chapter 2167 picnic is 11 a.m.-2 p.m. June 26 at Lampe Park. All active and retired federal employees and families and friends are invited.

Fundraiser held for paralyzed teen

Friends of Jessica are holding a spaghetti feed fundraiser to help Jessica Vega, 14, of Gardnerville, who has Guillain-Barre syndrome because of a vaccination.

The fund-raiser is 5:30-7:30 p.m. Thursday at the Carson Valley Middle School multipurpose room.

She is partially paralyzed and requires physical therapy and ongoing treatment. Her medical expenses are ongoing and exorbitant. All proceeds will go to the Vega family for Jessica's care and expenses.

Tickets for the spaghetti feed are $10 general admission or $5 for ages 5 and younger; a family ticket is $25.

There will also be a raffle and silent auction of items donated by local businesses.
