Carson City

Funeral home hosts open house today

Autumn Funerals & Cremations will hold a ribbon-cutting ceremony at 5:30 p.m. today at 1575 N. Lompa Lane.

Refreshments and open house begin at 4 p.m.

Special Olympians in need of baseball mitts

Carson City Special Olympics is short of adult-size baseball mitts because athlete numbers have almost doubled since last year.

Tours available at Bowers Mansion

Guided tours of Bowers Mansion are now offered seven days a week. Tours begin every half-hour between 11 a.m. and 4:30 p.m., starting from the mansion courtyard. Cost is $5 for adults, $4 for seniors, and $3 for children age 3-17.

Bower's Mansion Regional Park is located at 4005 Old US 395 on the west side of Washoe Valley.

Reno rock art at Artists Co-op

Celebrate Nevada's first art at the "Rockin' Out" art show. The Artists Cooperative of Reno is hosting the fifth annual Nevada Rock Art Foundation art show. This fundraiser supports the foundation's work identifying and protecting our fragile rock art heritage. Twenty percent of sales will be donated to the foundation.

More than 100 artists in a variety of mediums including painting, photography, gourds, sculpture, ceramics, jewelry and more will be at the show. Even fragrant rock art soap will be available.

"Rockin' Out" will run from June 28-July 31. The reception will be 11 a.m-4 p.m. Sunday with refreshments. Call 852-5090.

Virginia City

Fourth of July Parade seeks entrants

Virginia City's annual Fourth of July Spectacular will include the traditional parade, Comstock Cowboys Second Amendment Celebration Concert and a fabulous fireworks display.

The Comstock is looking for new parade entries to join the regulars.

Classic cars, equestrian groups, marching groups, bands and many more entries will join the annual parade.

To enter the parade, call (775) 847-4768 for a parade form.

Forms need to be returned by mail or fax by Sunday to be part of the advance lineup. Late entries are still welcome, but will be put at the end of the parade.

Lineup will begin at 10:30 a.m. at the Fourth Ward School.

Bodie announces extended hours

Bodie State Historic Park, one of the West's best-preserved ghost towns is now open 8 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Visitors can view over 100 remaining buildings that are preserved in a state of "arrested decay." A self-guided tour booklet describing histories of selected buildings is $2, and there is a museum. Park admission is $3 per person. Children ages 6-16 are $1, and children 5 and under are free.
