Residents asked to suggest names for park in Silver Oak

A park being constructed in Silver Oak is in need of a name - and the city is seeking suggestions for one.

The three-acre park will be at 3051 Oak Ridge Drive, off College Parkway, within the Silver Oak subdivision.

All that is required is a letter describing why the suggestion would be suitable. This must be received by 5 p.m. April 23, at the Parks and Recreation Department office, 3303 Butti Way, Building 9, Carson City, NV, 89701.

The ideas will be presented to the Parks and Recreation Commission, which will make recommendations for the Board of Supervisors who will make the final choice.

Commission members will discuss it during their meeting at 5:30 p.m. May 1, in the Sierra Room of the Community Center, 851 E. William St.

"All citizens who submit proposals are encouraged to attend and support their interests at this public meeting," said Roger Moellendorf, parks director.

Construction of the park has been postponed while work continues on Oak Ridge Drive, the entryway to the park, though it's expected to be completed before the end of the year, he said.

Silver Oak developers provided 13 acres for public use in 1993. Three acres of the 13 were sold to the Boys & Girls Club of Western Nevada which, in turn, sold it.

While seven acres were set aside for an elementary school, these remaining three acres were earmarked as a site for this neighborhood park. Work on it began in late 2005.

Most of the city's parks are named based on location, or after powerful or well-known people. Ross Gold Park was named after the city's first parks director.

Ronald D. Wilson Memorial Park, in the works at Mark Way and James Drive, was named after the city's purchasing director and former undersheriff who helped secure a bond in the 1980s that helped finance parks and recreation activities.
