Residents' thoughts sought at regional transportation meeting

Carson City residents can ask questions and voice their opinions about regional transportation issues during a meeting this week.

Thoughts are being sought before members of the Carson Area Metropolitan Planning Organization approve three transportation-related documents: The unified planning work program; bicycle and pedestrian plan elements of the regional transportation plan; and amendments sought in the regional transportation improvement program.

Carson residents need to remember that "CAMPO is regional and also serves north Douglas and west Lyon counties," said Patrick Pittenger, the city's transportation manager.

The work program, for example, identifies projects and funding. Local governments are only responsible for a small portion of the cost because 90 percent of the money comes from the federal government.

Nonmotorized travel areas to be discussed run on and off roads and include sidewalks. Ability for people using them to reach sites of interest is an important consideration, as is making sure residents can reach transit services, Pittenger said.

The meeting is from 4-6 p.m. Wednesday in the auditorium of the Carson City Library, 900 N. Roop St. Staff members will be on hand to explain why things are done in a specific manner and accept comments.

"Sometimes people like to talk to a person, to ask them questions," he emphasized. "This type of meeting allows time for this."

The feds also require public comment for these plans.

Members of CAMPO will make decisions about the plans during a meeting scheduled May 31. Comments will be accepted up until this meeting.
