120 YEARS AGO

James W. Morrison writes from Dawson to relatives in Sacramento giving an outline of the situation in Dawson: People are arriving daily without food to last 30 days, 75 people arrived yesterday, only four with provisions. Starvation leads to desperation. A 14-by-18 foot cabin costs $800 to build, lots sell from $200 to $15,000, rent $75 a month, coal oil is scarce, flour is $50 for 50 pounds, bacon $1.50 a pound and cord wood is $25 and not easy to get.

100 YEARS AGO

Several good strikes have been made in the Lakeview district. A small ledge on one of the claims owned by Mr. McEwen was broken into and assays showed values of $74 in gold and $6 in silver beside a small percentage of copper. The property of Nulty and Smith is being developed as the owners have a couple of men at work sinking on their ledge.

70 YEARS AGO

Christmas Gifts - The Swastika Girl Reserves of Carson Hi held their Christmas meeting. Each girl turned in at least two toys which are to be given away to the needy families in Carson City.

50 YEARS AGO

Advertisement: "Carson Theater, shows daily 7 and 9. 'The Prince and the Showgirl' with Marilyn Monroe and Laurence Olivier."

20 YEARS AGO

The jobless rate in Carson City rose a full percentage point. Statewide unemployment count also rose last month from 30,200 unemployed in September to 32,600 unemployed.

10 YEARS AGO

A state takeover of the only road to a proposed nuclear waste storage site on the Goshute Indian Reservation, was ordered by the Utah Transportation Commission. The panel declared the road 40 miles southwest of Salt Lake City to be under state authority. "The shipment of high-level nuclear waste is an issue for all Utahans and not just those living in Tooele County, " said Tom Warne, executive director of the Utah Department of Transportation.
