Carson City




4-H seeking leaders in three counties


University of Nevada Cooperative Extension is recruiting volunteer leaders for its 4-H youth leadership and development programs. No experience is necessary, and cooperative extension provides training and support.


In Carson City and Storey County, volunteers are needed to lead or co-lead shooting sports, fishing, archeology, aviation, astronomy, journalism, cooking and guide dog or therapy pet clubs. Call Jim Barcellos or Sandy Wallin at cooperative extension, 887-2252.


Douglas County 4-H needs leaders or co-leaders shooting sports clubs, which includes archery, shotgun, rifle and air pistol; and horsemanship clubs, including western and English clubs. Call Shannon Montana, at the cooperative extension, 782-9960.


Volunteers for shooting sports clubs must attend a special training Nov. 9-11 in Pahrump.




Muscle-Powered Ride is Thursday


Muscle-Powered bike rides are set for 5:30 p.m. Thursday and Oct. 11 and 18. Riders gather at Carson Middle School, 1140 W. King St. Beginning rides, 8-15 miles, helmet required. Must be a member, memberships available at ride. Contact 315-2719.




Nominations for governor's arts awards due Friday


The Nevada Arts Council and the Office of the Governor invite nominations for the 28th annual Governor's Arts Awards to recognize and honor those Nevadans who add to our quality of life today, and ensure a strong cultural legacy for future generations.


Nominees and nominators must be current Nevada residents or organizations/businesses that work in and for the benefit of Nevada. Nomination packets must be received by the Nevada Arts Council at the Carson City office by 5 p.m. Friday.


Nominations will be accepted for:


• Excellence in the Arts


• Excellence in Folk and Traditional Art


• Leadership in Arts Education


• Leadership in the Arts - Organizations


• Leadership in the Arts - Individuals


• Patronage in the Arts - Individuals or businesses that have sustained and enhanced the arts through contributions of time, effort or financial resources.

Veterans job fair today at National Guard Armory


The Department of Employment, Training & Rehabilitation, (DETR) and Nevada JobConnect will host a special career fair aimed at helping veterans obtain employment.


The "Veterans Only Career Expo" will take place 9 a.m.-4 p.m. today at the National Guard Armory at 685 East Plumb Lane in Reno. Employers from a variety of industries will be on hand for interviews.
