The Western Nevada College women's soccer team still couldn't break through for its first Scenic West Athletic Conference win on Friday, settling for a 1-1 tie at Salt Lake Community College.
Western Nevada (6-3-1, 0-2-1) outshot Salt Lake 14-5, but again had trouble converting its chances. "It was a really good game," Wildcat coach Hillary Arthur said. "We're still having a little difficulty in the offensive third putting the ball in the net."
Alexia Balmaseda had several excellent chances, but was denied by Salt Lake's goalie. Balmaseda was able to break through in the second half to tie the game 1-1 after Salt Lake led 1-0 at halftime.
Sweeper Kim Duke sent a ball forward that was misplayed by a Salt Lake defender when she tried to head the ball away. Balmaseda beat the defender to the ball and was able to score.
The Wildcats next play on Sunday in a nonconference game against Laramie County (Wyo.) Community College, ranked No. 4 in the nation, in Salt Lake City. Western Nevada lost to Laramie 1-0 last year in the first round of the National Junior Collegiate Athletic Association Tournament.
"We're looking forward to playing them again and see how we do," Arthur said. "It's definitely going to be a good challenge for us. It will definitely be a great test for us."
