Event set Thursday for young voters

Youth Voice and the Associated Students of the University of Nevada are hosting a voter registration drive on campus Thursday.

Youth Voice is a nonpartisan group dedicated to increasing voter registration and participation by 18-25 year olds.

The event is called "Voice the Vote," and is part of a nationwide effort to interest more young people in participating in political events.

The event will be held at the student union from 10:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m.

A spokesman said students will have the opportunity to talk with representatives from the different political parties and political clubs on campus, hear from prominent Nevadans about the importance of civic involvement and register to vote.

Nevada Democratic Party Chairman Jill Derby, a former member of the Board of Regents, will speak, as will Secretary of State Ross Miller.

Greg Bailor, head of Youth Voice, said they are trying to confirm several Republican speakers as well. He said all Republican and Democratic candidates have been invited as well.

Yerington Hotel to be demolished

The Yerington Hotel at West and Virginia streets in Yerington will be demolished by the end of November.

The property was purchased in September for $135,000 by the adjacent Holy Family Catholic Church, which will tear down the 101-year-old hotel to create more parking space for the church.

A duplex behind the building will be used for office space.

Rev. Jorge Herrera said the church will try to sell doors, windows and other items from the hotel before it is demolished. Call 775-463-2882 for details.
