Fallon

James Dean films to play in Fallon

The Churchill Arts Council will continue the three classic films starring James Dean as its Fall Film Series at the Barkley Theatre.

The critically acclaimed "Rebel Without a Cause" will be shown on Thursday, and the series will conclude with Dean's last film, "Giant," which also stars Elizabeth Taylor and Rock Hudson on Nov. 15. All screenings will start at 7 p.m., and there will be a no-host art bar from 6-7 p.m.

Tickets for each film are $7 for CAC members and $10 for nonmembers and will be available at the Oats Park Box Office on the nights of the screenings. Call 423-1440.

Soul-singer LaVette appears in Fallon

The Churchill Arts Council will present a performance by the blues diva Bettye LaVette Nov. 10th in the Barkley Theatre at the Oats Park Art Center, 151 E. Park St., Fallon. Doors will open at 7 p.m. and performance is at 8. There will be a no-host bar. Tickets are $17 for CAC members, $20 for nonmembers, $10 for students at 423-1440.

WNC to stage 'Carousel'

Western Nevada College Fallon will offer the classic American musical "Carousel" at 7 p.m. Nov. 8-10 and 15-17.

Shows will be at the Churchill County High School Theater, 1222 S. Taylor St.

Rodgers and Hammerstein's "Carousel" is the story of a small-town girl who falls in love with a carnival barker who has a bad reputation. It's love, consequences and redemption set in a New England close-knit fishing community, a story that explores the issues of social class and conduct.

Tickets are on sale at WNC Fallon. Prices are $12 for adults, $10 for senior citizens, and $8 for children ages 12 and younger. Call 423-5186.

Health care proponents to speak

Nevada for Health Care officials will attend a Fernley Democratic Club meeting at 7 p.m. Thursday at the Truck Inn.

NHC is a nonpartisan, nonprofit organization that is working to raise the issue of health care in Nevada's presidential caucuses.

The discussion will focus on health care issues and a mock caucus.

The organization according to Jessica Ennis, NHC organizer, indicated the organization "is a grassroots campaign with over 12,000 health care voters statewide working to push all the presidential candidates to come up with real solutions to our health care crisis."

Discussion will also focus on where the presidential candidates stand on health care reform.

Healthy Communities to hold funding conferences

Healthy Communities Coalition of Lyon and Storey Counties is working with Nevada's Substance Abuse Prevention and Treatment Agency to support, enhance, and expand evidence based prevention in Lyon, Storey, and Mineral counties.

Meetings explaining Healthy Communities Coalition prevention plan and the state prevention Infrastructure funds that will become available are planned.

In Lyon County, a meeting will be from 9 a.m.-noon, Monday at the Silver Springs Community Center, 2945 Fort Churchill Road, Silver Springs.

In Storey County, a meeting will be held from 9 a.m.-noon Tuesday at the Comstock History Center, 20 North E St., Virginia City.

These limited funds will be available to organizations through an application process for evidence-based prevention strategies and programs within the Lyon, Storey, and Mineral regions that meet the needs outlined in the Coalition's local plan.

Smith Valley

Advisory board election set

Seven Smith Valley residents have been nominated for election to fill three seats on the Smith Valley Advisory Council.

The election will be held at Smith Valley High School at 7 p.m. Wednesday, and all Smith Valley registered voters are eligible to vote.

Nominees are Linda Acciari, Toni Garms, Ervin Hill, Nicolee Kuzmicki, Jim O'Banion, Laura Thrailkill, and Joan Wilder, who are vying for council seats currently held by Jerry Rosse, Linda Acciari and Toni Garms.

Each candidate will speak briefly before the election is held.

FFA alumni holds bingo night

The Smith Valley FFA Alumni is sponsoring a Bingo Night beginning at 5 p.m. Nov. 10 in the gym at Smith Valley High School.

There will be more than 200 prizes and gift certificates given away.

Bingo cards are $5 each, or five for $20, and a variety of drinks and snacks will be available for purchase.

A carnival with games for the younger kids will be held, and the SVHS agriscience students will have their gift baskets ready for a silent auction.

Youth foundationto hold dance

The Smith Valley Youth Foundation will host its annual dance with barbecue and auction at 5 p.m. Saturday at the Smith Valley Community Hall.

A raffle and auction will be open and in full swing throughout the evening and ticket prices for the event are 5 and under free; ages 6-12, $10; and ages 13 and over, $25.

Jordan Barr of J-Dog DJ Service will perform.

Veterans Day potluck planned

The Smith Valley Veterans Day Potluck will be held at noon Nov.12 at the Smith Valley Schools.

Table service, dessert, and enchiladas will be provided.

For the potluck, those with last names starting with A-L, are asked to bring a main dish and those with last names beginning with M-Z are being asked to bring salads.

This year's Veterans Day event is hosted by the Smith Valley Schools K-6, Smith Valley 4-H, Beta Sigma Phi, Mrs. Fillmore's Art Class, and former VFW Ladies' Auxiliary Post #8084.

Virginia City

Veterans Day Parade set

Veterans galore will be in attendance at the annual Virginia City Veteran's Day parade, down C Street in Virginia City beginning at 11 a.m. on Nov. 11.

This year Virginia City will honor as grand marshal Glenn Tierney of Carson City, a retired test pilot who worked on the first Sidewinder guided missile system.

Anyone wishing to be a part of the parade can get a parade form by stopping by the Virginia City Visitor's Center at 86 South C Street, Virginia City or call 775-847-4FUN (4386). A form can also be downloaded from VisitVirginiaCityNV.com and should be turned in by Nov. 10.

Late entries are welcome, but will be put the entrant at the end of the parade. Call 847-4768.

Cowboys' Christmas show at Piper's

David John and the Comstock Cowboys will perform their annual "Christmas in the Sierra" production at Piper's Opera House for two shows, one at 4 p.m. and another at 7:30 p.m. Dec. 8.

The band mixes Christmas songs cowboy-style with holiday originals and traditional carols. Santa will be on hand for the children.

Reno Jazz Orchestra to perform

The Reno Jazz Orchestra will perform at 7 p.m. today at the Jeanne Dini Cultural Center.
