Motorist accused of brandishing a gun could face charges

A report will be submitted to the District Attorney's Office to determine if charges will be filed against a Carson City man who showed a loaded gun to another motorist Tuesday.

Charges are also being considered against the other motorist who tailgated the first vehicle for blocks in what police have described as "road rage."

According to police reports, William Arends, 58, was southbound on Fairview Drive near Butti Way at about 4 p.m. when he allegedly cut in front of a truck driven by Barry Jones, 47, of Minden.

Jones then allegedly tailgated Arends' vehicle along Edmonds Drive, and down to the parking lot of the old Wal-Mart at the corner of Clearview Drive and South Carson Street, said Sgt. Earl Mays.

Mays said when Arends pulled into the parking lot, Jones followed.

"Mr. Jones pulled in and was driving toward (Arends). He said he was going to go to the side of him and park next to him. Mr. Arends said he felt threatened by Mr. Jones' actions, and he showed him that he had a gun," said Mays.

Arends allegedly told police he was afraid and had forgotten to bring his cell phone with him so he couldn't call police. Arends allegedly told police that he was loading his gun as Jones was following him, Mays said.

Jones called 911 and reported the incident and police stopped Arends' car near Eagle Station and Silver Sage Drive at 4:18 p.m., according to reports.

The weapon, which Arends had unloaded, was recovered in his vehicle. Arends was initially cuffed, but then released after officers determined he was not a threat, said Mays.

Arends agreed to allow officer to take custody of his weapon for safekeeping. Mays said the report will reflect the actions of both Jones and Arends, and either of them could be charged with a crime by the district attorney.
