Police: Magazines sales a scam

Two girls who went door to door claiming to sell magazines for a Carson High School fundraiser were frauds, police and school officials said.

Police received a report Thursday afternoon from a woman who said she and several of her neighbors had fallen victim Wednesday night to the two teenage-looking girls who said they were raising money for the girls soccer team at the high school.

According to the victim, the girls came into her home in the Ash Canyon neighborhood and said they lived nearby. They stayed for a while, talking up the woman and her daughter and convincing them they were legitimate. The girls successfully conned the family out of $200 in checks.

When the impostors went to another home where the son is active in the varsity soccer program at the school, that family became suspicious and the girls left. They then called their neighbor and the first woman was able to put a stop payment on her checks.

A receipt the girls left behind was later discovered to list a Las Vegas address that does not exist and a phony Web site.

"We are not raising money for the girls soccer program," said CHS Principal Fred Perdomo.

Lt. Bob White said the incident is being investigated and warned residents against door-to-door salespersons.

"Anybody that comes to your door asking you for money you should be suspicious about. Legitimate sources usually do it differently," he said.
