Tree council celebrates Arbor Day

The Shade Tree Council will celebrate Arbor Day 5:30 p.m., today, at the Steinheimer Park, Northridge Subdivision. A Bur Oak Tree will be planted at 6 p.m. The Shade Tree Council will recognize Carson Dodge with the George Washington Ferris Award at the celebration. For information, call 887-2100.

Cattlemen seek scholars

Nevada Cattlemen's Association seeks applicants for the annual scholarship. Graduating seniors interested in pursuing an agriculture education should apply. Deadline for all applications is May 5. This year's outstanding graduating senior will receive a $100 scholarship to attend a junior college or four-year university. Applicant must meet the following requirements: have at least a 2.5 GPA; submit three letters of reference from teachers; write an essay on any current issue involving the beef industry. Scrapbooking fundraiser planned

C.C. Meneley Elementary School Playground Committee and P.T.O. hosts "Scrappin' 4 Slides," a fundraiser to purchase new safer playground equipment for the students, 6 p.m., tonight, at Holy Grounds Coffee House, 1267 US Highway 395 N, No. H. Deadline for Boys' State nearing

High School juniors are encouraged to apply for the American Legion Nevada Boys' State Program. The program allows high school juniors in Nevada to run and participate in a student government for a week at the UNR campus.

The mission of the American Legion Nevada Boys' State program is to develop future leaders by educating and inspiring youth. The program creates an understanding of and appreciation for our democratic form of government while encouraging a commitment to future service.

The application deadline is Wednesday.

Beginning weaving offered at Douglas Senior Center

Beginning weaving will be offered 1:30-3:30 p.m. Thursday, May 1-June 5, at the Douglas County Senior Center, 2300 Meadow Lane, Gardnerville. The class fee is $50. This is a six-week program learning hands on weaving practice with a loom, exploring the history of weaving, fiber types, loom types, design patterns and at the conclusion a completed project.
