For 12 years now, Carson City's Todd Tetrault has set up a Christmas tree lot next to Michael's Cycle Works on South Carson Street.

Despite the dire economic forecast, Tetrault said business is better this year than last.

"Prices at the tree farm have gone down, so my prices have gone down," said Tetrault on Friday.

His lot, complete with lights and blow-up ornaments, is one of three that dot the highway south of Fairview Drive.

A landscaper in the warmer months, Tetrault said he and his parents, Pat and Wayne, enjoy the seasonal tree sales. They don't try to compete with the stores, but instead cater to people looking for a more "family experience."

"You get to see everyone in the Christmas spirit," he said.

This year is the first time David Warren and Eric Metcalf decided to try their hand at peddling tannenbaum.

The day after Thanksgiving, the duo set up their lot in the 3400 block of South Carson Street next to Kragen Auto Parts.

"It has its ups and downs," said Metcalf. "Staying in the motor home is probably not the highlight."

Farther down the street in the former Midas shop, Joe Alt's tree lot has reappeared after a three-year absence.

And across town on Highway 50 East next to Tires Plus, first-time tree sellers Sue Heberger and daughter Elyse were raising money with their tree sales for the Carson High School Rodeo Team.

"We were afraid we weren't going to be able to tap into businesses this year for our rodeo. A lot of our sponsors are construction companies and it's a bad time for them right now," said Sue. She came up with the idea of Christmas tree sales and found Tires Plus willing to donate them space for their lot.

"I'm kind of a Christmas tree fanatic. I love beautiful Christmas trees and our trees are beautiful," she said.
