Carson girls go out with win

RENO - Wins have been few and far between for the Carson High girls basketball team.

That's why it was nice to see Carson end the season with two Sierra League wins, including a 65-56 win over Wooster Friday at Craig Congdon Gymnasium.

"They played so hard all year," said first-year coach Todd Ackerman, who watched his team struggle to a 3-11 record in league play. "We won the last two, and that's great for them. It's a really nice way to end the year.

"I thought we defended well most of the time (this year). There is a lot of room for improvement."

And Ackerman said that Carson will have a summer program this year, which should be beneficial to the program.

Carson led 14-9 after a quarter, and maintained that five-point bulge in the second quarter thanks to a 13-4 run at the end of the period to go up 29-24. Breanna Anderson scored all eight of her points in the span to lead the way.

The Senators broke loose in the third quarter, going on a 17-4 run in the final 4 minutes ,27 seconds to build a 16-point lead, 48-32.

Gina Bianchi, who led Carson with 21 points, scored seven points in that surge. Yvonne Hollett added four of her eight third-quarter points in the barrage.

"Yvonne hit a couple of shots in a row," Ackerman said. "We also got a couple of cheap ones. I can't say we turned our defense up. We got some stops, got a couple of steals and easy buckets."

Carson came out flat in the fourth quarter, and the Colts went on a 12-5 run to slice the deficit to 53-44 with 2:45 remaining in the game.

Sheila Christy scored five points to lead the Colts' surge. Carson would go 5 1/2 minutes without a field goal until Tiffany O'Day and Bianchi scored 16 seconds apart to restore order and get Carson's lead back up to double digits, 57-44, with 2:10 left.

April Harden, who led the Colts with 18, drained two treys to make it an eight-point game, but it came way too late.

Senior Christy Works, playing in her final game, complemented Bianchi with 12 points, while O'Day and Hollett added 10 apiece.
