Regarding Mr. Enge's contention that there is something sinister about the selection process for the new superintendent of Carson City Schools; Didn't the voters of Carson City elect the current board to make precisely these kinds of decisions, i.e. to hire a new superintendent if the need arose? And what does the selection protocol for selecting a superintendent of schools in Portland, Ore. have to do with Carson City? Aren't the well educated, informed and hard working members of our school board capable of this task?

Could it be that Mr. Enge has another motive for suggesting that the action of the school board is not on the up and up? I wonder if it might have anything to do with the fact that the heir apparent to Dr. Pierczynski's job, Mr. Richard Stokes, was working in his capacity as Associate Superintendent of Human Resources when, following repeated conflicts with the district, Mr. Enge left his teaching position at Carson High School after negotiating a deal for separation with a federal mediator and school district officials.

What is it they say about when something looks like a duck?

Another reason to spend dollars in Douglas County

Galaxy Theatre has got to be kidding!

Imposing an age limit on Friday and Saturday night movies is ridiculous. There is already a curfew in this state. Until now the only thing for our teens to do in Carson was to go to the movies or bowl. Coming from the outlying areas is just too costly for kids to drive to Reno or Douglas to have a little fun. And how convenient that Northgate theaters just closed - maybe your actions could have kept them open longer - at least they would get the teen weekend business. There are only so many bowling lanes available on the weekend nights.

So - come on Galaxy - seems like you have your head somewhere else. Looks like just another reason to spend our money in Douglas County!

Jail should be built in Silver Springs

Don Harina is right when he stated the Lyon County Jail should be in Silver Springs. Spending $19.1 million to expand and upgrade the jail is a waste of taxpayers' money, because in five to 10 years it will have to be done again. I have toured the jail and it is a mess and there are all kinds of hidden costs in those walls.

Building the jail in Silver Springs will cut the costs that Mr. Harina outlined. Not only should the jail be built there but an entire law enforcement and court complex. Why should the majority of Lyon County citizens have to drive way out of their way to Yerington; Silver Springs would cut travel and expenses for the folks of Lyon County in half.

Another thought to cut costs is build the jail bigger than it needs to be and rent the cells out to the federal government and other law enforcement agencies. Many other forward thinking agencies have done this and it has helped pay the overhead and in some cases they have made a profit from their jail.

Putting a Band-Aid on the problem will end up costing us twice the jail cost in the future. Having spent 29 years in law enforcement I have seen the effects of remodels, they do not work and end up costing twice the original costs.
