The latest winter storm is snarling traffic in the Sierra and western Nevada with gusting winds, blowing snow and icy roads.

Nevada Highway Patrol Trooper Scott Simon said numerous spinouts and crashes have been were reported through the region, though no serious injuries were immediately reported.

A winter storm warning is in effect through tonight for the Sierra Nevada and Lake Tahoe region.

The National Weather Service said 4-6 inches of snow was anticipated around Lake Tahoe, with up to a foot above 7,000 feet.

Chains or snow tires were required on all mountain passes, including Interstate 80 over Donner Summit and Highway 50 over Echo Summit.

Over the weekend, a potent series of storm dumped as much as 11 feet in the mountains.

In the Reno-Carson City area, blowing snow is turning already slick roadways into ice rinks, sending vehicles skidding out of control.

White out conditions persisted for much of the morning on Highway 395 in Washoe Valley between Reno and the capital city.

Simon said the hazardous conditions led to numerous accidents and vehicles off the road. To ease the danger, troopers escorted traffic across the 10-miles stretch at slow speeds.

North of Reno, Simon said a four-vehicle crash also backed up traffic on Highway 395 in Stead. Several vehicles were involved in spinouts and fender benders on that stretch of highway.

In Fallon, a tractor-trailer rig rolled and knocked over power lines, blocking the road that connects Highways 50 and 95. Simon said the driver was flown to Renown Regional Medical Center in Reno with what was described as moderate injuries.

South of Carson City in Douglas County, a crash at Johnson Lane backed up midmorning traffic on 395, Simon said. The extent of injuries was not immediately known.
