Lyon County Assistant District Attorney Mark Krueger filed Wednesday for election to the First Judicial District Court judge seat currently held by Judge Bill Maddox.

Maddox has said he does not intend to seek re-election.

"I am excited about my candidacy for district judge for the people of Carson City and Storey County. My experience, candor, fortitude and dedication to public service are essential judicial qualities which I will bring to the bench," Krueger said.

Krueger, 38, lives in Carson City with his wife, Shanna, a Dayton High School teacher, and their twin son and daughter. Shanna was named the 2006 History Teacher of the Year for Nevada.

Krueger has been the assistant district attorney in Lyon County since he was appointed by District Attorney Bob Auer in December 2006. As assistant district attorney he has practiced criminal, civil and administrative law, and supervises an office of 19 staff and deputies.

Krueger said his time there has given him experience in prosecuting criminal cases, including murder and sexual assault cases.

In addition, Krueger handles civil issues and cases, planning and important budget matters for Lyon County. During his career, Krueger noted, he has argued before the U.S. Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals, the Nevada Supreme Court and federal and state district courts throughout the state.

Prior to joining the Lyon County District Attorney's Office, Krueger was a senior deputy attorney general with the Nevada Attorney General's Office. While at the attorney general's office, Krueger practiced in the areas of banking, finance, consumer protection, unclaimed property, general civil litigation and administrative law. Krueger also supervised several other deputies attorney general.

A Virginia native and 1998 graduate of California Western School of Law in San Diego, Krueger spent six months as a substitute teacher in Seeley, Calif., before coming to Carson City to serve as an extern to Supreme Court Justice A. William Maupin.

He subsequently served as a law clerk to now retired Judge Michael E. Fondi, and then Maddox.

Krueger made an unsuccessful bid for Carson City Justice of the Peace in November 2006 losing to incumbent Robey Willis.
