Leonard Getty was born at Hays, Kansas, and grew up during the Dust Bowl years in the Depression.

He joined the Coast Guard on his eighteenth birthday, in 1941. Initially stationed at a lighthouse on the Oregon coast, he met Barbara Ann Cosmus; they were married on August 29, 1943. He served on the USS Orange, a destroyer escort, assigned to convoy escorts and participating in the landings on New Guinea and the Philippines. After the war, he went to college at Oregon State, majoring in engineering. His career was primarily with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers; his biggest job was the construction of the missile bases for the country's ICBM program.

He retired in 1980, spending his retirement in the Sierras, first at June Lake, Calif., and then in Carson City.

He is survived by his wife, Barbara, three of his four sons, eight grandchildren, and eight great-grandchildren.

Arrangements entrusted to Walton's Chapel of the Valley.
