Waters restrictions went into effect on Sunday and will continue through Sept. 30.

If the last digit of your address is an odd number, you may water before 10 a.m. and after 6 p.m. on Tuesdays, Thursday and Saturdays.

If the last digit of your address is even number, you may water before 10 a.m. and after 6 p.m. on Wednesday, Friday and Sunday. There is no watering allowed on Mondays or between the hours of 10 a.m. and 6 p.m.

Water running along the street, gutter or storm drain is a violation of Carson City law and can result in a fine.

Ron Johns of Carson City Public Works said for a first-time violation on any of the restrictions, the customer will receive a verbal warning, the second time the customer will receive a written warning, and a third offense results in a $50 fine added to the water bill. If the customer is contacted three additional times, the fine increases to $100. If they continue to disobey the restrictions, they could end up in court, Johns said.

Hand watering is allowed when flowers, shrubs and vegetables need a little extra.

Residents are discouraged from watering when the temperatures are too high or conditions are windy.

An exemption to restrictions may be requested by phone at 887-2355 ext. 1025, or in person at 3505 Butti Way.

Grounds for an exemption are as follows:

- Carson City licensed commercial gardeners or commercial caretakers who are on the premises at the time watering is taking place.

- New lawns, for 21 days from planting or installation.

- Vegetable gardens.

- Complexes that file for and receive approval of an irrigation plan.

- Handicapped or disabled people may also qualify for an exemption.
