Nevada baseball sweeps Louisiana Tech

The University of Nevada baseball team swept a doubleheader at Louisiana Tech on Sunday, winning the opener 7-5 in 10 innings and the nightcap 2-0.

Nevada scored two runs in the 10th in the opener on its way to improving to 28-19 and 15-9 in the Western Athletic Conference. Louisiana Tech fell to 5-20 in the WAC and were eliminated from playing in the conference tournament, which it will host on May 22-25.

In the opener, Kevin Rodland began the 10th inning with a double and scored on Nick Leid's RBI single. Jason Sadoian's sacrifice bunt then moved Leid into scoring position and Dayton's Matt Bowman followed with a single to put runners on the corners for Jason Rodriguez.

Bowman stole second base and Rodriguez was promptly intentionally walked as first Shaun Kort stepped to the plate. Kort's sacrifice fly scored Leid with the second run of the inning.

Wolf Pack reliever Stephen Bautista retired the side in order in the bottom of the 10th to give Nevada the win.

Nevada struck for a pair of runs the first. Sadoian started the inning with a single and came around to score on designated hitter Terry Walsh's single through the left side. Kort. who singled in the inning, scored the second run on an error.

The Wolf Pack added two more runs in the second to go up 4-0. Leid started the inning with a solo home run and Kort later doubled down the left field line to score Sadoian when he reached after being hit by pitch.

Nevada scored a run in eighth when Leid singled and came around to score on Bowman's sacrifice fly to make the score 5-3. Louisiana Tech scored twice in the bottom of the eighth to tie the score at 5-5

Bautista (2-2) pitched 2.1 innings of hitless, shutout relief to earn the win. Brock Stassi pitched allowed four runs, three earned on nine hits in seven innings.

Sadoian, Kort and Leid tied for game-high honors with three hits apiece while Bowman added two hits.

In the nightcap, Derek Achelpohl pitched Nevada to the win. The Wolf Pack scored in the sixth in Terry Walsh's RBI single. The Wolf Pack's second run came in the seventh as Sadoian reached on an error, Bowman singled and Rodriguez followed with an RBI single.

Achelpohl was looking for the complete game shutout, pitching in the ninth but walked Albie Goulder and gave up a single to designated hitter Jericho Jones to start the inning. But then he snared a line shot off the bat of Drew Bunting and threw to first base to double off Jones. Reliever Chris Garcia then came out of the bullpen to face pinch hitter Chris Bohannan and struck him out swinging to pick up his second save of the season.

Rodrigues and Walsh each had two hits to lead the Wolf Pack. Nevada returns to action for its final homestand of the season, a four-game series against Sacramento State at Peccole Park. The series begins with a game at 6 p.m. Friday.
