120 years ago


The last session of the Legislature passed a bill providing for a test oath which was intended to encroachments of the Mormons in the politics of the state. It provided that voters, before having their names placed on the register list must take an oath to the effect that they held no allegiance to the church of Latter Day Saints and did not practice polygamy. The Secretary of the State has refused to include the test oath in the call and the Governor's private secretary has begun amandamus suit to compel the same. This will make a test case and bring the writer before the Supreme Court.


100 years ago


Don S. Dickerson, Lieutenant Governor, is elected by virtue of the death of Governor John Sparks yesterday, became Nevada's chief magistrate and proved an honor to the state whose destiny he controls. He came from White Pine County as a delegate and he is credited as the important factor to the Democratic party's victory in the fall of 1906.


70 years ago


The strange death of Marian Gilbert. The case is definitely not closed but an autopsy revealed the woman died of starvation and exposure. How did starvation overtake Marion Gilbert when there was a large supply of horse meat and hot cake flour in her camp? Why also did not Buck Biamont starve in the snow-locked cabin? Her husband, Jim Gilbert is to return here in a few days to search the Detroit mine for clues to one of the most mystifying deaths ever to take place in western Nevada.
