Our shock of the week was seeing that our editor, Barry Ginter, has left the Appeal, and been replaced by Peggy Santoro. While we welcome her, we will miss Barry and his kind sense of humor, and wish him well in whatever he does in the future.

Good Happy Birthdays to Ashley Glover and Terry Beauchamp. Celebrate and rejoice. ZBistro will be on its vacation from Nov. 20 (after lunch) and will return on Dec. 1. Don't despair ... the French Connection will be back soon. And French lessons will resume on the 23rd with Michel (885-2828). Virginia Nuzum and M went to lunch at the Golden Dragon (by the north WalMart). It's a pleasant place to have lunch (particularly when Virginia is treating M for her birthday ... which was in July), with good food, nice people and excellent prices. Certainly worth a try.

Thanksgiving is nigh upon us, so here's an Internet story from Ken Fraser: "A game warden comes across a young man with a wild turkey under his arm. He asks, 'Where'd you get the turkey?' 'What turkey?' the boy asks. 'That one,' says the game warden, pointing to the bird. 'Well, lookee ... a turkey roosted under my arm.' The game warden tells the young man, that he will do whatever the boy does to the turkey, to him. 'If you break his leg ... I'll break yours. If you break his wing, I'll break your arm. Whatever you do, I'll do it to you ... so, what's it gonna be?' The boy looks at him, then at the turkey, and says, 'I guess I'll just kiss his butt and let him go.'"

For all of you who are nice, (not like the "turkeys" who write this column), please drop off a frozen turkey at FISH, the Salvation Army or the Ron Wood Family Resource Center. They are all collecting turkeys and canned goods to help those in need in this community, so that they will all have a Happy Thanksgiving (and later, Christmas dinners and gifts). The Ron Woods Center also is helping with Toys for Tots with the Marine Corps. 'Tis the season ...

Carson City's Pinkerton Ballet Theatre will be performing its 20th anniversary of the "Nutcracker" at the Carson City Community Center on Nov. 28 and 29 at 7 p.m., and at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 30. This is such a wonderful show for the Thanksgiving-Christmas season, and is not to be missed. Great dancers (like Gail Ruff, Vern Manke and Bob Belnap ... the real "nuts" in the show), and some real professionals to balance them out (remember it's the season to "be nice" before you wring our necks). For information, call 841-4232. It's a grand show to take the whole family ... so go!

Well, BLM has put its "euthanize the wild horses" on hold for a year. We still think that if they DO do-in the horses, they should be put to good use as dog food, instead of several thousand carcasses left to rot. Maybe Mrs. Boone Pickens suggestion is the right one ... buy some land and let them run free.

Dr. Rex Baggett, of the Ross Clinic at FISH, has received the November Jefferson Award from KRNV, Channel 4. The award recognizes great service to the community ... and we know it is greatly deserved. Dr. B gives of his expertise to all who are in need at the clinic. There is more need now than ever, with the economy the way it is. Congratulations, and we love you!

This week, count all your blessings, tell your friends and family you love them (make up with them, if necessary) and help out where you can. Invite a friend for dinner, or go to the Nugget and give thanks. And remember our men and women serving in our Armed Forces. Say a prayer for President-elect Obama, too. And our condolences go to Sarah Pennebaker, the lovely lead in "South Pacific," on the recent death of her father. We are so sorry.
