Pink and purple displays create awareness

Each year I receive a call from Advocates to End Domestic Violence to remind me that not only is October Breast Cancer Awareness Month, it is also Domestic Violence Awareness, which is represented by purple.

Both campaigns are equally important. Breast cancer strikes one in every eight women. Domestic Violence affects one in three women.

It was publicized again this year by the Violence Policy Center that for the second year, Nevada ranks first in the nation for women killed by men. So look for the color purple this month as well as pink.

This month there will be several events to bring awareness to the public about domestic violence. Kicking off the campaign this week, banners will be flying over Carson Street.

The fences around the Capitol are lined with beautiful purple bows. I passed by there this morning, and it looks beautiful. Those bows are a visual reminder of domestic violence.

Each Saturday come join "Paper the Town" by hanging ribbons and getting the information out about domestic violence.

Also, several locations throughout town will have a "Fill a Can, Feed a Family" campaign.

If you would like to participate in any of the campaigns, call advocates to ask how you can lend a hand.

I have included the Web site so you can check out yourself where the money goes.

Click on the "Shelter Life" button and see what your assistance has done over the last year.

There are a few students each year who need assistance with the fees to hit the slopes.

It's not like football or basketball that receive a large amount of funding and profit from ticket sale.

So there are always students who might not be able to afford the cost of hitting the slopes. I believe that everyone deserves to participate in sports. Of course, if you have experienced the beauty of gliding down the amazing Kirkwood trails or know the fun of competition, you know why it's important to sponsor a student to get a chance of a lifetime.

If you want to assist and get some advertisement on the annual Ski Spirit packet shirts like last year's sponsors, Tahoe Fracture, CHG Masonry, Kirkwood, The Sporting Rage, Michael Hohl, Carson Jeep Nissan, Greater Nevada Credit Union, Horseshoe Club and others, call the local Carson High Ski Team

With Halloween at the end of the month, Pioneer High School Leadership Club is helping local children who cannot afford a costume.

Thalia Dean requested some assistant from me to ask if you could sort through your children's old costumes and give the gently used ones or even purchase new ones for children ages 7-13.

If you find a cute spaceman or princess costume that is no longer needed, donate them at Pioneer High School in the main office located off of Park Street. Help local kiddos have a safe, fun and attired Halloween.
