Prep roundup: Leid 'carries' Carson softball to win

Daria Leid scattered seven hits and Carson scored three runs in the second en route to a 3-2 non-league softball win over McQueen Tuesday afternoon.

Leid struck out 11, walked 4 and the only runs McQueen scored were unearned.

The win give Carson a 12-3 record entering Thursday's Sierra League game against Damonte Ranch. Carson will visit Damonte Ranch for a 10 a.m. doubleheader Saturday.

"Daria did a phenomenal job," Carson coach Scott Vickrey said. "She carried us. We didn't hit the ball very well. It was a miserable day out there."

Natalie Morrow and Megan Hein singled to start the second. Both moved up on a fly ball to right and Hannah Shaw followed with a two-run single. Carson's final run in the inning was the result of a McQueen error.

The Lancers sliced the deficit to 3-2 in the fifth, as Carson committed three of its five errors.

Carson had runners in scoring position two other times, but failed to score.

Pershing Co. 10,

DAYTON 5

Five runs in the second and five Dayton errors enabled Lovelock to post a non-league win over the Dust Devils.

Dayton scored two in the first, but Lovelock scored five in the second to take the lead for good.

Mariah Collins and Mackenzie Cole finished with two hits apiece. One of Cole's hit was a run-scoring triple in the fifth. Crystal Macgirvin went 1-for-3.

Lindsie Cross walked five and allowed six hits in picking up the pitching loss for the Dust Devils.

BASEBALL

MANOGUE 17, CARSON 0

Carson rested several key regulars, and Bishop Manogue pounded the Senators in a non-league contest. The game was stopped after five innings because of the 10-run mercy rule.

Carson coach Cody Farnworth was not happy with his team's effort.

"We didn't compete," Farnworth said. "It was one of the days where nothing went right for us."

Manogue scored 10 first-inning runs and added six in the second. Evan Miller went 5-for-5 and hit three-run homers in the first and second innings.

Carson had chances to score in its first two at-bats, but couldn't come up with the clutch hit.

Tommy Preston and Ty Hutchins singled in the first, but the next three hitters were retired. In the second, a hit by David Charles, a walk and a hit batsman loaded the bases. Hutchins struck out to end the threat

Carson returns to Sierra League action with a home game Thursday against Damonte Ranch at 3:30 p.m.

Dayton 5,

Pershing Co. 3

The Dayton baseball team stopped a three-game losing skid behind the bats of two junior varsity call ups.

Jake Cook knocked in three runs in the first inning with his first varsity home run, a shot to left-center field. He went 2-for-3 with 3 RBIs.

Tim Ply joined in the fun with a solo home run in his first varsity at-bat. It was his only hit of the day.

"They finally started to swing at good pitches," Dayton coach Jay Merrell said. "Hopefully this is what we've been waiting for, for them to break out offensively."

Logan Garling picked up the win in a complete game, five strikeout performance. He also went 2-for-2 from the plate with a triple and an RBI.

Tim Doyle was 2-for-2 with a double.

The Dust Devils (4-10) play another non-league game Thursday against Silver Stage.

DOUGLAS 11, TRUCKEE 1

Douglas High junior Beau Battista threw a strong game against Truckee Tuesday afternoon, striking out eight and scattering five hits as the Tigers rolled to an easy win over the Wolverines.

Every player in the Douglas starting lineup collected at least one hit in the win, but right fielder Conner Dillon led the way going 2-for-2 at the plate with a triple and four RBIs.

Tyler Hoelzen also tripled and he and Tanner Thomas each went 2-for-2 with an RBI. Tim Rudnick, Brett Hartley and Brett Anderson each had a hit and an RBI in the win and Tyler May, Shane Fencl and Kameron Van Winkle each had a hit.

Truckee had six hits, all singles, in the game and was led by Mike Fagen with a 2-for-3 performance. Kevin Decker, Justin Vosburgh and McLane Brady had the Wolverines' remaining hits.

Truckee got on the board first in the game as Brady led the second inning off with a single and Scott Mathot drew a walk. A balk moved the runners to second and third and Brady stole home on a dropped strike at the plate.

A two-out walk later loaded the bases, but Battista got out of the inning on a strikeout.

Douglas posted a five-run third inning, bolstered by a three-run triple off Dillon's bat and brought three runs across in both the fourth and fifth innings to end the game.

Douglas improved to 11-5 on the year and will host a doubleheader against top-ranked Reno Wednesday at 11 a.m.

JV Softball: Carson 5, McQueen 0

Carson's JV softball team improved to 15-2 overall with a 5-0 win over McQueen behind the 13-strikeout 1-hit pitching of Christina Gallegos and a three-RBI performance by Christa McGahuey.

Taylor Rae-Canfield added two hits, while Morgan Kleine added a hit and RBI, Emily Collins collected a hit and Hannah Winder collected a hit.

JV BASEBALL: Spanish Springs 11, Carson 9

The Senators dropped their seventh game of the season and are 8-7 on the year and hold a 3-3 league record.

Austion Pacheco and Tim Baylor went 2-for-4, while Danny Gall went 2-for-3 with a home run and Danny Okimara was 2-for-3.

They play again at 3:30 p.m. Thursday against Damonte Ranch.
