RENO " The Reno Gazette-Journal announced today that it's shutting down production of the Carson Times and is laying off 35 more employees, about 10 percent of the newspaper's work force.

Gazette-Journal Publisher Ted Power announced that the newspaper is ending publication of the weekly paper in Carson City, the Carson Times. Its last edition will be April 17.

The cuts are in addition to the elimination of 61 positions since December. The newspaper also recently halted the publication of two other weeklies " the Douglas (County) Times and Fallon Star Press.

Power says the layoffs were necessary due to the economic downturn and its impact on advertising revenue. He did not say how many of the layoffs were in the news room. He says departing employees were given severance packages based on their years of service to the newspaper.
