AL capsules: Blue Jays fall to 0-5 on year

CLEVELAND (AP) " Not even Cliff Lee could stop Cleveland's slide.

The reigning Cy Young Award winner lost his second consecutive start and the Indians, expected to contend this season, remained the AL's only winless team, losing 5-4 to Roy Halladay and the Toronto Blue Jays on Saturday to fall to 0-5 for the first time in 24 years.

Halladay (2-0), a 20-game winner last season who finished second to Lee in Cy Young balloting, held Cleveland to one run and five hits in seven innings. The right-hander struck out seven, including two in a sticky second, and was rarely in real trouble.

Desperate for a clutch hit, the Indians finally got one in the ninth on Mark DeRosa's two-out, three-run double off closer B.J. Ryan to make it 5-4. But with the potential tying run at second, Jason Frasor struck out Victor Martinez for his first save.

Lee (0-2) gave up four runs and seven hits over five innings, and now has a 9.90 ERA.

Aaron Hill had two RBIs for Toronto, which improved to 5-1 " its best start since 2001.

Red Sox 5, Angels 4

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) " Jason Bay homered twice and drove in three runs for Boston, helping Brad Penny win his American League debut.

Mike Lowell added a two-run shot for the Red Sox, who ended a nine-game regular-season losing streak against Los Angeles. It's been a different story in the postseason, however, with Boston eliminating the Angels in the first round of the playoffs three times since 2004.

Jonathan Papelbon, who got the final four outs, gave up a leadoff homer to Torii Hunter in the ninth. The Angels then loaded the bases with two outs before Papelbon retired Howie Kendrick on a tricky line drive to right fielder Rocco Baldelli.

It was Papelbon's second save.

Penny (1-0) gave up three runs and five hits, two of them homers by Mike Napoli.

Joe Saunders (1-1) gave up four runs and seven hits in seven innings for Los Angeles.

White Sox 8, Twins 0

CHICAGO (AP) " Bartolo Colon pitched six strong innings and Carlos Quentin homered, leading the White Sox to the victory.

After a rough spring training, Colon (1-0) handled the Twins' lineup with relative ease. He allowed just three hits with two walks and two strikeouts, helping Chicago end a three-game skid.

Francisco Liriano (0-2) was tagged for five runs and six hits in 4 2-3 innings for Minnesota. He struck out three and walked four.

Tigers 4, Rangers 3

DETROIT (AP) " Placido Polanco hit a tiebreaking double and five Detroit pitchers combined on a two-hitter.

Nate Robertson (1-0) earned the win with two shutout innings, and Fernando Rodney struck out the side in the ninth for his first save. Detroit's bullpen didn't allow a baserunner in four innings of work.

Tigers starter Justin Verlander needed 97 pitches to get through five innings. He allowed three runs " one earned " and two hits. He walked four and struck out eight.

Hank Blalock homered and Josh Hamilton drove in two runs for the Rangers, who have lost seven straight at Comerica Park. Matt Harrison (0-1) allowed four runs, nine hits and five walks in 5 2-3 innings.

Polanco's two-out double off Harrison in the sixth scored Adam Everett from first base and gave Detroit a 4-3 lead.

Mariners 8, Athletics 5

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) " Kenji Johjima had a two-run single in a four-run eighth inning and Seattle rallied twice to earn the win.

Russell Branyan homered and Franklin Gutierrez and Jose Lopez each drove in two runs for the Mariners, who won their third straight.

Seattle's eighth-inning rally began when Bobby Crosby, making his debut at third base, mishandled Mike Sweeney's grounder leading off. Adrian Beltre singled and Santiago Casilla (0-1) walked Branyan to load the bases.

A's closer Brad Ziegler took over and gave up Lopez's two-run double and Johjima's two-run single.

Miguel Batista (1-0) got the win and Brandon Morrow recorded three outs for his second save.

Jack Cust hit a two-run homer for the A's, who lost their second straight.
