Battle Near Eureka: At last the threatened storm has broken loose near Eureka. One hundred Carbonari yesterday attacked the Sheriff's posse at Fish Creek, the former losing five men as stated in a telegram to Colonel G. G. Lyon, Private Secretary to the Governor. None of the posse was hurt. The city is quiet.

100 YEARS AGO

Janes and McLaughlin lost the tennis doubles to the national champions yesterday at Newport. Janes went down in a single match, but McLaughlin is yet to be defeated in the national interscholastic championships and is touted as the man who will win them.

70 YEARS AGO

While Mrs. Ada Anderson was at the show last evening, her home was burglarized. The loot, as far as Mrs. Anderson has ascertained, amounted to exactly 37 cents - a quarter and pennies.
