After reading Dr. Paslov's recent commentary in the Appeal regarding developing a Community Volunteer Corps, it struck me that our Nevada Rural Counties RSVP program must not be doing a very good job of publicizing what we do. Volunteer opportunities are available for anyone wishing to put his or her talents to work as a volunteer.

RSVP has been doing a premier volunteer program in rural Nevada for 36 years, utilizing volunteers of all ages and walks of life. RSVP carries five types of insurance on all volunteers, and pays out-of-pocket expenses if they are 55 or older. All volunteers, regardless of age, are insured and included in our recognition lunch and dinner events and our annual Christmas party.

As to volunteers serving in government, RSVP has volunteers in 19 different state divisions plus volunteers in all rural county and city government agencies such as sheriff's and health departments.

Besides providing eight direct basic need services to seniors to help them remain at home as long as possible, RSVP provides over 1,200 volunteers to 189 other non-profit organizations that serve needy persons statewide.

Rather than reinvent the wheel, let's improve and build on what we already have. We would love to have someone of Dr. Paslov's caliber and talents volunteer for RSVP programs.

As for youth, there are plenty of volunteer opportunities. If what RSVP has to offer doesn't appeal to them, they can try AmeriCorps VISTA (Volunteers in Service to America) or join the CCC (Civilian Community Corps) program. Both offer stipends and benefits. You can find out more by calling Nevada Volunteers at 775-825-1900. As for stimulus funds, they are only for new programs where none currently exist.

Dr. Paslov makes a great point - there is a lot of talent out there not being utilized to its fullest. Call RSVP and find your volunteer niche. Our motto is "Do something great and feel something wonderful!" Studies show that people who volunteer to help others are healthier and live longer than those who do not.

Add life to your remaining years. Ask about our Home Companion Respite Care Program to help stressed-out caregivers. Stipends and mileage reimbursement are available.

Call 775-687-4680, ext. 6 and put more zest in your life!
