Former Carson City Mayor Ray Masayko announced Saturday that he is running for the Capital Senatorial District seat currently held by Mark Amodei.

"I am proud to call myself a conservative Republican and will base my campaign on the core principles of low taxes, smaller government, the promotion of individual freedom with collective responsibilities and adherence to our Constitution," stated in a handout Masayko distributed at the Project Americans Coming Together event at the Plaza Convention Center.

The event featured prominent conservative and Republican speakers including Rep. Dean Heller, Lt. Gov. Brian Krolicki and former state senator Joe Heck, who is running for governor.

Masayko said that the outcome of the 2009 Legislative session concerned him very much, and put Nevada on the wrong track.

"Taxes were increased on Nevada's citizens and businesses, in the midst of a serious economic recession, needed reforms in spending and cost control were barely addressed, virtually all of the tough issues were kicked down the road," he said.

Masayko served as Carson's mayor from 1996-2004.

Republican Assemblyman James Settelmeyer also was at the event, and said he will be a candidate for the Capital Senatorial District as well, but hasn't officially announced yet.

Amodei was elected to the state senate in 1998, and can't run for another term because of term

limits.
