A panel discussion on suicide prevention will be held at 9 a.m. Thursday at the Silver Springs Community Center, 2945 Fort Churchill St. The meeting, hosted by the Healthy Communities Coalition, is open to the public and free.

The discussion will offer ways to recognize suicide warning signs and how to intervene.

Lyon County, which includes Silver Springs, has experienced 27 suicides this year, three times as many as in 2008.

Suicide prevention resources also will be outlined at the meeting, including the 24-hour Crisis Call Center, 1-800-273-8255 and www.crisiscallcenter.org., and the Suicide Prevention Action Network, www.spanusa.org.

Panelists will include Misty Allen of the Nevada Office of Suicide Prevention; Tribal Youth Suicide Prevention coordinator Cassandra Darrough; Debbie Posnien, executive director of Suicide Prevention Network of Douglas County; and Cheryl Bricker of the Yellow Ribbon Suicide Prevention program.
