130 YEARS AGO

A Benighted People: A British tourist appeared in Virginia City yesterday with an umbrella. In less than five minutes over a dozen horses had pulled up their hitching posts and were dashing down the street. The mob set upon the man and the boys snowballed him out of town. In times like these the Comstock will tolerate no such snobbish exhibition of style as that.

100 YEARS AGO

A decision was handed down by the Supreme Court ruling that security given to cover a gambling debt cannot be recovered from the party holding the same and that even a deed given for such a debt could be recovered by the person issuing the same. The case grew out of Menardi vs. Wacker.

70 YEARS AGO

Progress is being made on Warren Engine Co. No. 1's New Year's Eve Dance to be held at the new civic auditorium. Volunteers will be calling on every person in Carson to help contribute to Carson fire's expenses during the coming year.

50 YEARS AGO

The state economic development department and the department of fish and game will go to Ely for the Great Basin national park hearings. Economic development will support the effort. Sportsmen oppose the park.

20 YEARS AGO

Details of Virginia City's "Johnny Come-Lately Club," are featured in a history column by Phillip Earl of the Nevada Historical Society. The club was organized May 6, 1879 in deference to Pioneers that "lived in memory of the past, mainly a false one which has grown up out of oft-repeated yarns without foundation."

10 YEARS AGO

Marauding bears are causing Ash Canyon residents to call foul. Wildlife officials say it is resident's responsibility to keep garbage secure.
