Free guided snowshoe trek

The Tahoe Rim Trail Association hike leaders will host an eight-mile, moderate snowshoe trek Saturday to Martis Peak, off of Highway 267.

Sign-up in advance, and bring your own snowshoes.

There will be free guided snowshoe treks every Saturday through the end of March. Discover the great fitness and social benefits of the easy-to-learn sport of snowshoeing.

Third race in winter series

Fleet Feet's third in a series of winter races will be 8-10 a.m. Feb. 21 at Centennial Park.

Entrants should park in the far back lot of the park, behind the upper baseball fields.

The race will be approximately a 10K and will include a climb, a rolling section, a descent and "some pretty poor footing along the way," according to the Web site.

Bowling to benefit Make-A-Wish

The third annual Bowl for Wishes will be 10:00 a.m.-4 p.m. at the National Bowling Stadium, 300 N. Center St., Reno. Cost is $25 per person and includes food, shoes and prizes.

All proceeds go to the Make-A-Wish Foundation of Northern Nevada.

Carson City

Carson Country USBC Bowling Association is hosting its annual City Open Championship 12:30-9:30 p.m. Saturday at Carson Lanes, 4600 Snyder Ave.

Soccer sign-ups in Dayton

Dayton Valley Soccer sign-ups will be 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday at Smith's Grocery Store on Highway 50. Boys and girls must be 4 years old as of Aug. 1 to participate.

Cost is $65 for the first child and $55 for each additional child if paid by Feb. 21.

Learn the art of Native American dance

A Native American dance class will be offered 3-5 p.m. at the Carson Colony gymnasium, 2900 S. Curry St. It's free and open to the public.

Muscle Powered will host a walk around Empire Ranch Golf Course at 5:30-6:30 p.m. Tuesday.

Snowshoe race and walk at

Camp Richardson

The Tahoe Mountain Milers and Sagebrush Stompers Running Clubs are hosting a snowshoeing event Feb. 22.

If you can walk, you can snowshoe. You don't have to race, just have fun!

The Eric Nageotte Memorial 5K Snowshoe Race and Familiarization Walk, an event sanctioned by the Road Runners Club of America, will start at 10 a.m. at Historic Camp Richardson Resort.

Sign up by Feb. 14 to save $5, and be sure to reserve a pair of snowshoes. There is no guarantee that shoes will be available on race day without reservation.

Early registration is $25. After Feb. 14 and on race day registration is $30.

Online registration is available at www.active.com. The entry fee covers post-race refreshments donated by Camp Richardson and continued day-use of the groomed Camp Richardson trails.

When Eric was killed in 2004 while training in New Zealand to achieve his dream of making the U.S. Ski Team, the running clubs decided to designate the Eric Nageotte Scholarship Fund the beneficiary for this event.

Eric had been a club member with his dad, Ron Nageotte. As a student, Eric participated in many kids' races.

This year, the fund benefited the entire Freestyle Team by paying for their gymnastic training. Jay Panther, a friend and teammate of Eric's also was a recipient. The fund also helped two teammates from single-mom families.
