Students working hard on senior projects

Class registration for 2009-10 is under way. Counselors have met with the current freshmen, sophomores and juniors and collected their registration forms.

Any current Carson High student who has not registered for classes must make an appointment with their counselor to do so. Counselors will return to the middle schools on Wednesday to collect the eighth-graders' registration forms.

All eighth-graders must remember to return their forms on Wednesday.

Carson High School is grateful to the hundreds of community volunteers who participate in the Senior Project each year.

If you want to be a part of this learning experience, or would like to know what involvement entails, please contact Darlene Nevin at dnevin@carson.k12.nv.us by March 6.

This year's projects will be presented on April 30 and May 1.

For her senior project, Danielle Johnson is holding a fundraiser at Applebee's Restaurant for a child who needs cleft palate surgery.

The breakfast will take place on Saturday from 8-10 a.m. Tickets can be purchased for $7 from the Sugar Pine Cove, Video Centro on Highway 50 and Bordewich Bray Elementary School.

The CHS Environmental Club is recycling old cell phones, which contain environmentally toxic chemicals. Recycled phones will be donated to charity.

Phones can be dropped off at the environmental fair to be held at the high school on March 7.

Congratulations to senior Emma Robinson for raising more than $800 for the American Heart Association. Emma researched the effects of heart disease for her senior project and chose to hold a fundraiser at Straw Hat Pizza in support of the cause.

Congratulations also to the four finalists in the National Merit Scholarship Program. After being selected as semi-finalists in September, seniors James Bridegum, Adeline Duong, Jennifer Mital and Michael Weidemann submitted applications with recommendations from their teachers and counselors. All four will be considered for National Merit Scholarships to be offered in 2009.

Finally, Naval Junior ROTC Commander Skip Cannady extends his gratitude to the students and staff who donated money and clothes during a recent "miracle minute" conducted by NJROTC cadets.

Sixteen boxes of clothes were sent to Specialist Manny Ceja in Iraq to distribute the clothes to the people of Iraq. Manny is a CHS graduate currently serving as a medic in the Army.
