Western Nevada College's Jack C. Davis Observatory plans to celebrate the "International Year of Astronomy" with a raffle of a commemorative silver coin celebrating the opening of the observatory in 2003. The coin holder is signed by Buzz Aldrin, second man to walk on the moon, and Jack Davis, the observatory's namesake. The observatory will also release a photograph of an object in space each month of 2009.

The "International Year of Astronomy" is a global effort initiated by the International Astronomical Union and UNESCO to help people around the world cultivate a personal sense of wonder and discovery, said Robert Collier, director of the Davis Observatory.

This year is the 400th anniversary of important discoveries with early telescopes. In 1609, Johannes Kepler and Galileo Galilei made major scientific contributions by using observation and evidence.

Collier said Kepler published his first two laws of planetary motion and Galileo made first light observations through a refracting telescope. Galileo was the first individual to observe the moon, planets and stars over many hours, making notes and pictographs in his data logs.

Those interested in purchasing tickets for the raffle may contact any member of the Western Nevada Astronomical Society, or the WNC Foundation office at 445-3240. Tickets are $20 each or six for $100. The raffle drawing will take place on Dec. 26, 2009.
