Nevada Appeal Staff Report

Balance was the buzz word for the Dayton Dust Devils boys basketball team, as four players scored in double figures and another " Tannar Wood " added nine, as Dayton took a 59-53 road victory over Truckee on Saturday.

Dakota Lee scored a team-high 12 points, while Cage Walker, Nate Vonahsen and David Gomez each had 10 for the Dust Devils, who improved to 7-7 overall and 1-1 in league play.

"We did a good job moving the ball. We did a good job attacking pressure " especially in the first half," said Dayton coach T.W. Cunningham. "In the second half, we had too many turnovers. But we got some good things when we needed them."

Dayton will host Spring Creek Friday at 7:30 p.m.

Cunningham said his team is beginning to gel.

"We just need to continually progress through the year," he said. "We finally had a good first half. It's good to see."

SMITH VALLEY 64, VIRGINIA CITY 50

With starters Colt Dotson out with a broken wrist and Hunter Redman undergoing oral surgery, the Muckers were down some bodies. They still managed to stay close most of the night behind Joe Avignone's 13 points and 12 each from Kurt Lynch and Zach Shell, but eventually ran out of gas.

Virginia City, now 3-1 in league and 5-10 overall, travels to North Tahoe Wednesday at 7:30 p.m.

CARSON JV 66, MANOGUE 52

Tre Jensen scored a team-high 17 points to lead the Senators to a victory over the Miners Saturday at Carson High School. Chris Steele contributed 13 points and Matt Cooper had 11 for the Senators, who travel to Galena on Friday at 7 p.m.

GIRLS

VIRGINIA CITY 55, SMITH VALLEY 23

The Muckers jumped out to a 33-8 halftime lead and coasted to a win over the Bulldogs. Megan Brandon was one of three Muckers in double figures, with 13 points. Gigi Glogovac added 12 and Cambria Breithaupp 11 as Virginia City improved to 11-4 overall and 4-0 in league.

Corinne Hoover led Smith Valley with 10 points. The Bulldogs fell to 2-1 in league play.

CARSON FROSH 52, BISHOP MANOGUE 13

The Lady Senators used a smothering defense to defeat the Miners. Taylor-rae Canfield had five assists and Allison Vondrak and Taya Rains each had six rebounds. Carson is now 4-0 in Sierra League and is now 17-1 overall.

Carson places seven in JV Tournament

Nick Garcia led the Carson junior varsity team with a first-place finish in the 145-pound division Saturday in the Senator JV Tournament. Austin Brown (112), Ty Welch (119), Jimmy Weir (145) and Will Flores (215) each finished second for the Senators, who will next compete against Fallon on Wednesday at Morse Burley Gym.

Pedro Fuentes (112) and Logan Dargert (119) each placed third for Carson.

Eagle Valley Eighth Grade Boys win 2-of-3

Eagle Valley traveled to Auburn, Calif., to play in the Weimar Hills Warrior Classic and ended up winning two of three games.

Matt Nolan scored 13 points, Sage Smith had 10 and Jay Lanuza nine as Eagle Valley beat Forest Hill (Calif.), 50-19.

Nolan scored eight and Nate Hazzard six in a 41-31 loss to Pleasant Valley (Lake Wildwood, Calif.) in the second game.

Nolan had a team-high 13 points and Hazzard, Smith and Zac Hudson each scored seven in a 52-48 win over Penryn (Calif.). Eagle Valley is now 21-2.
