RENO " Despite the U.S. Olympic Committee's decision to not solicit bids for the 2018 Winter Games, regional groups pledge to continue the effort to bring the Winter Games back to the Tahoe region.
"This news is certainly disappointing, but we must remain focused on why our efforts to secure the Olympic rings are so important," said Lt. Governor Brian Krolicki, chairman of the local Olympic search committee's board of directors. "While our immediate goal has been securing the 2018 Olympic Winter Games, the long-term effort has always been about the journey that will serve to improve our region's tourism infrastructure and create world-class sporting venues."
The USOC's decision apparently is based on its desire to completely focus on Chicago's pending bid to host the 2016 games.
The 2016 host city will be announced in early October.
"We have understood and respected all along the USOC's focus on Chicago's 2016 bid," said Jon Killoran, RTWGC Chief Executive Officer.
The USOC made a similar decision in foregoing a 2014 Winter Games bid while concentrating on New York City's 2012 Summer Games bid. London was ultimately named the 2012 host city by the International Olympic Committee.
The Reno Tahoe Winter Games Coalition, as well as a similar coalition in Truckee, wants to bring a future Olympic Winter Games to the region.
