Program gives money to rural schools

Nevada schools will receive more than $5.4 million through the Secure Rural Schools (SRS) program.

Sen. Harry Reid, D-Nev., said the Forest Service, which administers the program, will distribute the money.

He said the funding legislation, which he helped pass, should help fund not only schools but roads. He said it will create employment with projects that maintain current infrastructure and improve the health of watersheds and ecosystems on national forest land.

"I know all areas of Nevada are hurting right now, and they need this money," Reid said. "This program, combined with the major increase in funding for rural counties that I delivered through the Payment in Lieu of Taxes program, will provide a stable source of income for our rural counties through the next few years."
