AL roundup: Posada's RBI single gives Yankees win

NEW YORK (AP) - Jorge Posada hit a game-winning RBI single in the 12th inning to lift the New York Yankees to a 6-5 victory over the Toronto Blue Jays on Saturday.

With one out and runners on first and second, Posada lined a 1-1 pitch from Shawn Camp into center field. Alex Rodriguez scored without a play as the Yankees poured out of the dugout to congratulate Posada near first base.

The Yankees have won nine of 10 to move a season-best 14 games above .500 and pull within a game of AL East-leading Boston, which lost 3-2 to Seattle on Saturday. Brett Tomko (1-2) pitched a scoreless inning for the win.

Adam Lind hit a two-run homer and Alex Rios had three RBIs for Toronto, which has lost six of seven. Mariners 3, Red Sox 2

BOSTON (AP) - Chris Woodward's bases-loaded pop up in the ninth inning dropped behind a partially draw-in infield to score the go-ahead run and lift the Mariners over the Red Sox.

Jason Varitek hit a two-run homer for Boston, which also lost Friday's series opener. The Red Sox had won their previous seven series overall. It was just their third series loss in their last 12 in Fenway Park.

Russell Branyan drove in the other two runs for the Mariners.

Seattle capitalized on Takashi Saito's wildness for the winning rally. Saito (2-2) walked the bases loaded with one out before Woodward's pop fell behind first baseman Mark Kotsay and second baseman Dustin Pedroia's diving bid, scoring pinch runner Wladimir Balentien from third easily.

Royals 6, White Sox 4

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) - Alberto Callaspo drove in three runs and the Kansas City Royals eclipsed their run total from their previous four games in a victory over the White Sox that snapped Chicago's seven-game winning streak.

Callaspo hit an RBI triple off Gavin Floyd (6-6) in the fifth for Kansas City's first run in 13 innings. His two-run single off Matt Thornton in the fifth made it 5-4 and gave the Royals their first lead in 38 innings. Callaspo's errors at second base had figured in Kansas City's four-game losing streak.

It was the Royals' first win in seven tries this season against the White Sox, who lost on the road for just the fifth time in 20 games.

Luke Hochevar (4-3) went six innings and gave up two home runs for the Royals.

Twins 4, Tigers 3

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) - Justin Morneau had four hits, including a homer and the tying single in the seventh inning, and the Twins came back to beat the Tigers.

Magglio Ordonez's three-run homer in the seventh spoiled an otherwise stellar start by Francisco Liriano, but Morneau capped the rally with his hit in the bottom of the inning.

In the eighth against Brandon Lyon (3-4), Nick Punto poked a soft single over the outstretched glove of shortstop Adam Everett to allow pinch-runner Matt Tolbert to score on a head-first slide just ahead of the relay throw.

Matt Guerrier (4-0) pitched one inning for the win, and Joe Nathan wrapped it up with his 22nd save to pull the Twins within three games of the first-place Tigers.

Indians 5, Athletics 2

CLEVELAND (AP) - Carl Pavano earned his first win in five starts, helping the Indians to a victory over the Athletics.

Ben Francisco and Grady Sizemore hit homers off Vin Mazzaro (2-4) for Cleveland, which won consecutive games for the first time since June 11-12. The Indians' fourth win in 17 games overall stretched their winning streak to six against the Athletics since April 12, 2008.

Kerry Wood, the fourth pitcher used by Cleveland manager Eric Wedge, worked the ninth for his first save since June 23 and 10th in 14 chances overall.

Orlando Cabrera, whose 14-game hitting streak was snapped Friday, had three hits and an RBI for Oakland, which has lost eight of 10.
