Bring the family for the grand opening of the Silverland Stables 8 a.m.-8 p.m. today.

View the stables and meet the staff, including Wrangler Rich of the R&K Ranch. Partake in sloppy Joes, then saddle up for a free 10-minute supervised arena ride for ages 6-99.

Hours are 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., seven days a week. The stables are located below the Silverland Inn and Suites, on 100 N. E St.

Silverland Stables offers hourly trail rides, riding lessons, overnight rides, moonlight dinner rides, Cowboy 101, and other special events.

Call (775) 691-7644 for rates and reservations. Discounted trail ride tickets can be purchased at the visitor center at 86 S. C St.

Take a guided walk with a park ranger through Washoe's wetlands to view birds, identify plants and learn which animals live in wetlands. Staff will have birding books on hand to use for this approximately two-hour program.

Bring binoculars to view birds and wildlife. This program is free and open to the public.

Participants will meet at the wetlands viewing area at 8 a.m. July 25. The viewing area is located on East Lake Boulevard. Take Highway 395 to exit 44 (East Lake Boulevard), go one mile north on East Lake Boulevard and turn left into viewing area.

July 25: Page Meadows Hike

Enjoy the lush meadow, summer wildflowers and aspen groves as you meander along a portion of the Tahoe Rim Trail suitable for all levels of hikers.

This five-mile hike is relatively flat. Bring lunch or snacks. Children older than 12 years old only, and please leave dogs at home.

July 31: Eagle Lake Trail to Desolation Wilderness

Take a lollipop hike with the loop around three gems in the Desolation Wilderness: Dick's Lake, Fontanillis Lake and Upper Velma Lake.

Participants should expect a steep climb, and a full-day hike. This hike is 11 miles round trip.

Participants are expected to be able to hike 2 mph at altitude, bring lunch, snacks and water. Sorry, no dogs on this hike. Pre-registration is required. Call the Tahoe Rim Trail Association office at 775-298-0012 or e-mail katyw@tahoerimtrail.org.

Register now for the Capital City Kids Triathlon on July 25 at the Carson Aquatic Facility. Ages 4-18 are eligible to compete. Safety helmets are required.

Registration begins at 7:30 a.m., and the triathlon begins at 8 a.m. Pre-registration is $15, or $20 the day of the event. For more information, call 887-2242.

Back by popular demand, Muscle Powered will provide a Bicycle Valet from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. at the Third Street Farmers Market every Saturday until Oct. 3.

Muscle Powered will have volunteers park and watch your bike while you shop.

Join Fleet Feet and Brugo's Pizza for the weekly "beer run."

Runners meet at Fleet Feet every Tuesday at 6 p.m. for a casual three- mile walk/run. The run ends at Brugo's Pizza across the parking lot for half-off beer night.

Experience the Tahoe Rim Trail in a whole new light with full-moon hikes led by experienced hike leaders. Take in inspiring views of the lake as the moon rises over the Lake Tahoe Basin.

Expect casually paced hikes for all ages, while slowing down to enjoy the flora and fauna, current happenings in the natural world and night time senses. Bring a flashlight, layered clothing and water.

This hike may not be suitable for children younger than 10. To respect the night sounds and wildlife, no dogs this time. TRTA membership is required.

Dates are Thursday, Aug. 6; Friday, Sept. 4 and Sunday, Oct. 4.

Memberships start at $20 for one year. Space is limited, sign up in advance. All Full Moon Hikes will start at the Tahoe Meadows Trailhead.
