Free parenting classes to be offered in Spanish

Western Nevada College is offering a series of free parenting workshops in Spanish on Friday evenings this month. The workshops are designed to aid family relations and help parents understand the importance of supporting their educational development to offer them better opportunity. They are set for 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. at Western's Cedar Building, Room 207.

The next workshop is "Growing Together: Improve Relationships." Presenter for the series is Maria Stella Duque. She earned a degree in administrative law from Libre University in Colombia and a degree in social political science from Popayan Colombia.

Future workshops:

June 19: "Holding Hands: The Importance of Educational Development."

June 26: "Future of Your Child: Prepare your Children to Reach their Goals."

WNC well represented at international fair

The Intel International Science and Engineering Fair brought more than 1,600 young scientists, their families and friends to the Reno-Sparks Convention Center for the world's largest science, math and engineering competition. With more than $4 million in prize money at stake, these young geniuses pulled out all the stops, showing off everything from advanced robots to homegrown biology studies.

Volunteer judges and helpers from Western were George McNulty (counselor), Dr. Brigitte Dillet (geology professor/division chair), Jeff Downs (mathematics professor), Robert Collier (professor emeritus, physics/astronomy), Dr. Gary Evett, (chemistry professor) and President Carol Lucey.

Five instructors receive tenure

A group of WNC faculty members were granted tenure at the recent Nevada System of Higher Education Board of Regents meeting at Western Nevada College. Congratulations to new professors Paul Eastwood (machine tool technology), Edda Gibson (nursing), Deborah Ingraffia-Strong (nursing), Emily Howarth (electronics/information systems) and Chad McCully (English).
