Legislature gives bump to local business

Every two years, Carson City businesses look forward to the influx of legislators and lobbyists to help fill local cash registers.

But with the state's budget shortfall causing headaches among those tasked with fixing it, this session isn't living up to its predecessors for local businesses.

"They don't seem to have the time to sit down and enjoy the long lunches that they used to," said Scott Doerr, owner of B'Sghetti's in downtown Carson City. "We still have the big caterings and big parties, but as far as the lunchtime rush, it's not significant."

Doerr said that while they do get a "little bump" during dinner time on week nights, it's not like past years.

"That's been a trend for the last six sessions we've been here," Doerr said. "They are taking less time, and doing more carry out."

Doug Cramer, owner of Mom and Pop's Diner across the street from the Nevada Legislature building, has noticed the trend, too.

"It's not like normal," Cramer said. "Some days are busy. But before, it was consistently that way."

Cramer said a big factor is the state budget.

"There is no money to be spent, and when they can't spend money, it's harder for them to do their work," Cramer said.

Some of the newer downtown businesses are enjoying their first legislative session and the money it brings in.

"I've had some people who are in town from Vegas who need haircuts, so we've seen a little pick up," said Kaci Pilgrim, a stylist at 3rd Street Salon.

Bella Fiore Wines will be celebrating its first anniversary this month, and is doing better with the Legislature in session.

"It's definitely a tremendous help," said Chad Mena, one of the owners of Bella Fiore.

"All the businesses are picking up when everyone gets out of work."

The close proximity of Bella Fiore is a big plus for attracting business from the Legislature, and helping them weather the economic downturn.

"When you look at everything as a whole with the economy, are we going to see less spending? Sure," Mena said. "But nevertheless, I still think people are going out and having a good time."
