Brodeur nears Roys' victory record

TORONTO " Johnny Oduya scored on a rebound while sliding into the crease 4:48 into overtime to help Martin Brodeur improve to 4-0 since returning from an elbow injury as the New Jersey Devils beat the Toronto Maple Leafs 3-2 on Tuesday night.

Brodeur, who missed 50 games before coming back last week, stopped 30 shots to move within four wins of breaking Patrick Roy's NHL record of 551 career victories.

Red Wings 5, Blues 0

ST. LOUIS " The Detroit Red Wings overcame an early injury to star forward Marian Hossa, getting Chris Osgood's first shutout of the season.

Hossa, the Red Wings' leading scorer with 34 goals and 61 points in 62 games, was hospitalized for observation after slamming headfirst into the end boards early in the first period following a check by Roman Polak. He left the ice strapped to a gurney as a precaution.

Panthers 4, Thrashers 3

ATLANTA " Rookie Michael Frolik scored two goals, Stephen Weiss had three assists and Florida moved into fifth place in the Eastern Conference.

Flyers 4, Bruins 2

BOSTON " Simon Gagne had two goals and an assist and Mike Knuble had a goal and two assists to lead Philadelphia.

Antero Nittymaki stopped 22 shots and Scottie Upshall also scored as the Flyers stopped a two-game losing streak. Philadelphia has won six of its last nine games to solidify its hold on fourth place in the Eastern Conference and a potential home-ice advantage in the first round of the playoffs.

Hurricanes 5, Capitals 2

WASHINGTON " Carolina's Patrick Eaves scored twice, and the Hurricanes produced goals every which way " penalty shot, short handed, power play, even strength " and handed Washington its second consecutive lopsided loss at home.

Predators 6, Oilers 5, OT

NASHVILLE, Tenn. " Jason Arnott scored a power-play goal at 2:31 of overtime, and Nashville beat Edmonton for its season-high fifth straight win.

Penguins 3, Lightning 1

TAMPA, Fla. " Chris Kunitz had two goals to lead Pittsburgh past Tampa Bay.

Matt Cooke also scored for the Penguins, eighth in the Eastern Conference. Marc-Andre Fleury made his 14th consecutive start, posting a 9-4-1 record over that stretch.

COLUMBUS, Ohio " Manny Malhotra had two goals and an assist, scoring the go-ahead goal midway through the third period to lead Columbus.

Flames 6, Senators 3

OTTAWA " David Moss got his first career hat trick and Warren Peters added his first NHL goal to lead Calgary.

CHICAGO " Martin Havlat scored 1:40 into overtime to lift Chicago.

Havlat broke down the middle from center ice, and despite being pulled down from behind by Anaheim's Corey Perry, he managed to loft a shot past Ducks goalie Jean-Sebastien Giguere.

Canucks 4, Wild 2

VANCOUVER, British Columbia " Pavol Demitra and Steve Bernier scored 28 seconds apart late in the second period, and Vancouver an early two-goal deficit.

Stars 4, Sharks 1

SAN JOSE, Calif. " Rookie James Neal scored two goals, Mike Modano had a goal and an assist, and Dallas snapped a five-game losing streak in the NHL's toughest road arena.

Brian Sutherby also had a goal and an assist for the Stars, who handed the Sharks their worst home loss of the season just when Dallas' hopes for a playoff run appeared to be fading. Marty Turco made 24 saves after losing the clubs' first four meetings of the year, and Dallas' defense largely shut down the NHL-leading Sharks' vaunted offense.
