From the "Voice of the Stars" a terrible series of disasters are likely to occur between the years 1880 and 1887, including the annihilation of the Chinese race and the death of 15,000,000 Americans from the plague; terrible storms, earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, famines.

The stage is having a hard time making the trip between Tuscarora and Elko - snow is drifted many feet deep and in other places there is no snow for miles necessitating four changes from sled to wagon.

70 Years Ago

The exhibit of art at the Carson Electric Shop includes the following: "Old Chinatown" in oil by Virginia Harsh; "Springtime in Nevada" in oil by Hans Meyer-Kassel; "Young Gardener" by Muriel Goodwin; "Winter Afternoon in Genoa," by Nancy Bordewich.

50 Years Ago

After 46 years, it's finally official - the sagebrush is the official emblem of the state of Nevada. Governor Grant Sawyer signed into law SB24 giving legal status to use the sagebrush - Nevada's emblem since 1913.

- Sue Ballew is the daughter of Bill Dolan, who wrote this column for the Nevada Appeal from 1947 until his death in 2006.
