Fairgrounds open for horseback riding

The Carson City Fairgrounds will open for horseback riding beginning today. The newly renovated fairgrounds, 601 Old Clear Creek Road, will be open from 8 a.m. to dusk when special events or activities aren't planned. There is no charge. No alcohol or glass containers are allowed. For information, call 887-2262.

Cut a rug at 'March Madness' dance

High Sierra Swing Dance Club presents its monthly dance, "March Madness," Saturday, March 28, Brewery Arts Center Grand Ballroom, 449 W. King St. Ken Bowers will teach a Beyond Basics West Coast swing lesson at 7 p.m., with a social dance following from 8-10:30 p.m. Deejay Gina Child will play a mix of dance music: West and East Coast swing, ballroom, country and Latin. Cost of the lesson is $7 for members of any swing club and $10 nonmembers; dance is $7 for club members and $10 for nonmembers. Join the club that night and get into the dance free. Author Sam Bauman to discuss new book

Carson City Library hosts local author Sam Bauman,

6 p.m., Tuesday, March 31 in the library's auditorium, 900 N. Roop St. Bauman will discuss his new book, "Then God is Forgiven." The book is about an English film actress and how her actions affect her associates. Bauman is the former entertainment editor at the Nevada Appeal, former foreign correspondent in Asia, Europe and Africa and has worked for the Associated Press, Los Angeles Times, Chicago Tribune and Playboy Magazine. Spring book sale to be held at library

The Friends of the Carson City Library host a Spring Book Sale, 10 a.m.-3:30 p.m., Friday, April 3 and Saturday, April 4. A special "Members only preview sale" will be 5:30-7:30 p.m., Thursday, April 2 for Friends of Carson City Library members. All proceeds benefit the Carson City Library. AARP offers free tax preparation

AARP will offer free tax preparation for seniors. Taxpayers wanting their taxes prepared and electronically filed for free do not have to be AARP members or any specific minimum age Through April 15 representatives will be at the Douglas County Library, 1625 Library Lane, Minden, 10:30 a.m.-3 p.m., Tuesday and Douglas County Senior Center, 2300 Meadow Lane, Gardnerville, 9 a.m.-4 p.m., Thursday.
