MLS: Colombus, Toronto battle it out for a tie

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) " Guillermo Barros Schelotto scored on a penalty kick before Columbus teammate Gino Padula had an own goal to give Toronto FC a 1-1 tie with the Crew on Saturday.

Kevin Harmse was called for a handball inside the Toronto penalty area after Schelotto's crossing pass hit Harmse in the arm from close range. Referee Michael Kennedy did not hesitate in signaling for the penalty kick, which Schelotto drilled past goalkeeper Stefan Frei in the 30th minute for his second goal in two games.

Columbus held the lead until Toronto midfielder Dwayne De Rosario's long free kick was headed toward the Crew goal by Padula in the 84th minute. The ball deflected off the crossbar, hit goalkeeper William Hesmer in the back of the head and bounced into the net.

Fire 1, DC United 1

WASHINGTON (AP) " Patrick Nyarko scored in the 53rd minute to lift Chicago.

Luciano Emilio gave D.C. United a 1-0 lead in its home opener with an unassisted goal in the 7th minute. Emilio brought the ball down the center of the field and fired a shot from just outside the penalty box.

Nyarko's tying score came in the 53rd minute when he took a pass on the right side of the penalty area and shot past charging United goalkeeper Josh Wicks.

Red Bulls 1, Revolution 1

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (AP) " Kenny Mansally's goal in the final minute of regulation gave New England the tie after giving up an own goal in the first half.

Mansally snuck behind the defense and knocked home a pass from Shalrie Joseph with about 36 seconds left for the Revolution.

The Red Bulls got their goal in the 35th minute, when midfielder Khano Smith's crossing pass was inadvertently put into the goal by New England defender Jay Heaps. New York then had a chance to win in the closing seconds, but Luke Sassano's hard shot sailed just wide.

Goalie Danny Cepero had 10 saves for the Red Bulls, while Brad Knighton had three for New England. Knighton was filling in for Matt Reis, a late scratch due to swelling in his knee.

Rapids 2, Wizards 1

COMMERCE CITY, Colo. (AP) " Terry Cooke and Omar Cummings scored to give Colorado a win in its home opener.

Wizards goalkeeper Kevin Hartman had four saves to become the all-time saves leader in MLS with 1,139, topping former Kansas City star Tony Meola. Hartman had entered the game two stops shy of surpassing Meola but with the league record for wins already in hand.

Cooke's unassisted goal in the 65th minute gave the Rapids an early lead, but Michael Kraus tied it four minutes later.

Cummings scored in the 74th minute to put the Rapids ahead for good. Colin Clark picked up the assist.

Earthquakes 3, Dynamo 2

SANTA CLARA, Calif. (AP) " Arturo Alvarez and Cam Weaver each had a goal and an assist to rally San Jose.

Weaver scored the winning goal in the 44th minute. He tookDarren Huckerby's deft pass in the penalty area off a long shot by Chris Leitch, then lifted the ball over Houston goalkeeper Pat Onstad for his first career MLS goal.

Ryan Johnson put San Jose ahead in the 30th minute and Alvarez made it 2-0 3 minutes later.

Dynamo forward Chris Wondolowski scored in the 34 minute and Brad Davis got the tying score on a left-footed shot less than 90 seconds later.

Sounders FC 2, Real Salt Lake 0-

SEATTLE (AP) " Fredy Montero scored his third goal in two games and and top overall draft choice Steve Zakuani set up Nate Jaqua's goal with a brilliant move in the first half for Seattle.

Swedish star Freddie Ljungberg played his first MLS game and first game of any kind in nine months on Saturday night, finishing a routine final 29 minutes for the Sounders.

Seattle joined the 1998 Chicago Fire as the only MLS expansion teams to begin 2-0-0. That Chicago team ended up winning the league championship.
