AL capsules: Boston takes two-game sweep in new stadium debut

NEW YORK (AP) " Jason Bay hit a three-run homer in a four-run first inning against Joba Chamberlain, and Boston beat New York 7-3 on Tuesday night for a rainy two-game sweep in the first trip to its rival's $1.5 billion ballpark.

Boston improved to 5-0 against New York for the first time since 1985 and has outscored the Yankees 38-23. New York is 6-5 overall at its new home following three straight losses.

Chamberlain (1-1) allowed hits to his first five batters, then recovered to strike out a career-high 12 in 5 2-3 innings.

Josh Beckett (3-2) bounced back from two poor outings and allowed his only runs on Johnny Damon's three-run homer in the third.

Beckett allowed 10 hits in six-plus innings, lowering his ERA from 7.22 to 6.75. Hideki Okajima followed with six straight outs.

Singles by Ellsbury, Dustin Pedroia and David Ortiz put Boston ahead, and Bay homered into the left-field seats, the 37th homer in 11 games at Yankee Stadium. Bay is 10 for 18 (.556) with three homers and 10 RBIs against the Yankees this season.

Tigers 9, Twins 0

DETROIT (AP) " Miguel Cabrera hit a two-run homer, Clete Thomas had three hits in his season debut and rookie Rick Porcello threw seven scoreless innings for Detroit.

Thomas had a triple, double, single and walk " driving in two runs " and Josh Anderson had two hits and an RBI. Cabrera went 3 for 4 with four RBIs.

Porcello (2-3) gave up four hits and lasted seven innings, matching his best performance in those categories in five starts.

Nick Blackburn (2-2) gave up a career-high nine runs " six earned " eight hits and three walks over 3 1-3 innings.

Blue Jays 10, Indians 6

TORONTO (AP) " Adam Lind hit a three-run homer and Scott Rolen added a solo shot in Toronto's seven-run seventh inning.

Trailing 6-3 after the Indians scored four times in the top of the seventh, the Blue Jays managed seven runs and six hits off four relievers in the bottom half.

With one out, Raul Chavez and Travis Snider singled off Rafael Perez. Vinnie Chulk (0-1) walked Marco Scutaro and left after Aaron Hill's two-run single. Alex Rios followed with an RBI single off Jensen Lewis.

Tony Sipp replaced Lewis after the second out, but Lind homered into the second deck in right before Rolen homered to left.

Cleveland relievers have a combined ERA of 6.49 this season.

Brian Wolfe (1-0) worked 2-3 of an inning for the win in his first appearance since being called up from Triple-A Las Vegas on Friday.

Rays 6, Orioles 3

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) " Matt Garza pitched eight strong innings and major league RBI leader Evan Longoria drove in three runs for Tampa Bay.

Garza (3-2) allowed three runs and four hits and improved to 6-0 lifetime against the Orioles. Brian Shouse got the first two outs of the ninth, and Troy Percival finished up for his fourth save.

Brian Roberts and Gregg Zaun homered to give the Orioles a 3-1 lead.

Longoria's pop-fly double off Koji Uehara (2-2) tied it 3-all in the sixth. He added a two-run single in the seventh that made it 6-3.

B.J. Upton ended an 0-for-20 skid, the longest of his career, with an RBI double that put Tampa Bay ahead in the seventh. Slumping Dioner Navarro also provided some timely hitting with a double and single after a 5-for-46 rut.

Rangers 7, Mariners 2, 10 innings

SEATTLE (AP) " Jarrod Saltalamacchia hit a grand slam that capped a six-run burst with two outs in the 10th inning off emergency fill-in Denny Stark, and Texas won its fourth straight.

Seattle rookie Shawn Kelley entered to begin the 10th, threw three pitches to Elvis Andrus and then fell in pain from a strained muscle on his left side.

Stark (0-1) was summoned on no notice and retired the first two batters before the Rangers broke loose. Marlon Byrd and Nelson Cruz had RBI singles before Saltalamacchia hit his second career slam.

Texas starter Vicente Padilla allowed one hit and one unearned run in eight innings. Darren O'Day (1-0) allowed his first run of the season in the 10th before Frank Francisco finished.

Royals 8, White Sox 7, 11 innings

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) " John Buck lined a game-winning single with the bases loaded in the 11th inning for Kansas City.

The Royals came back from a 4-0 deficit to tie it at 7-all on Billy Butler's run-scoring single in the seventh. Mitch Maier set up the winning run by walking with one out, then went to third on Willie Bloomquist's hit-and-run single off Lance Broadway (0-1). Alberto Callaspo was intentionally walked and Buck lined the next pitch just past third baseman Josh Fields.

Juan Cruz (2-0) pitched the 11th.

Mike Jacobs hit a three-run homer and Callaspo added a solo shot and a run-scoring double for the Royals, who have won four straight and six of seven.

Jermaine Dye and Josh Fields returned from hand injuries to homer and Scott Podsednik drove in two runs for Chicago, which had 16 hits. A.J. Pierzynzki had four hits and Carlos Quentin three, but the White Sox stranded 13 runners on to lose four straight to Kansas City for the first time since 2003.

Angels 5, Athletics 3

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) " Gary Matthews Jr. drove in three runs and Shane Loux provided another solid start by Los Angeles' patchwork rotation as the Angels won for the sixth time in eight games.

Chone Figgins had three hits and drove in two runs for the Angels.

Loux (2-2) won his second straight start after a 5 1/2-year stretch without a major league victory, allowing five hits and one run over seven innings.

Matt Holliday hit a two-run homer in the ninth for the A's, who have lost three straight to fall six games below .500 for the first time this season.

Dallas Braden (3-3) yielded eight hits and five runs in six innings.
