5K to benefit Douglas sheriff's honor guard

The Douglas County Sheriff's Office Honor Guard 5K Walk/Run To Remember is set for May 16.

The honor guard is hosting the event to raise money to send 10 members to the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial in Washington, D.C., in May 2010.

Honor guard members hope to raise $10,000 by next year to pay their way to the National Police Week ceremonies.

Entry fees for the race are $20 for early registration, $15 for senior citizens 55 and older, and $30 on race day.

Children 12 and under run for free. Each participant receives a commemorative T-shirt.

Pets are welcome, as are children in strollers.

Medals will be awarded for the first three places, and everyone will receive a blue ribbon.

Participants are to meet at 7:30 a.m. at the sheriff's office parking lot for sign-in and to pick up their T-shirts.

The 3.1-mile race course is from the parking lot to the Bently Biofuel Outpost service station and back. There will be two water stations along the route.

Reno River Festival and Run Amuck this weekend

Nearly 40,000 people will descend on downtown Reno's Truckee River Whitewater Park at Wingfield for three days of activities and entertainment during the sixth annual Reno River Festival.

The event that starts today and runs through Sunday features world-class whitewater competitions for pros and amateurs alike, the return of the popular, obstacle-filled "Run Amuck" fun run, free clinics, music in the park, food from a variety of vendors, a beer garden offering local microbrews and an outdoor expo offering popular products on the market today.

The 2009 Reno River Festival also includes free yoga in the park each morning at 9 a.m. thanks to Yogic Lounge and regular appearances from the world-famous Budweiser Clydesdales.

The second annual Run Amuck fun run is Saturday during the Reno River Festival.

Participants get down and dirty while crawling through a 60-foot-long mud pit and traversing a variety of other "mystery obstacles" during this costumed 2.5-mile, two-person relay race from downtown Reno's Wingfield Park to Idlewild Park and back.

The ruckus begins at 1 p.m. with the costume contest and the race starting at 2 p.m.

Register online at www.Reno RiverFestival.com/RunAmuck.

Participants are invited to the official Reno River Festival Kick-Off Party at West Street Market the night prior to the race to pick up packets and goodie bags.

Registration is $50 per two-person team and includes entry into the costume contest.
